fish n chips is a luxury now. Never thought it would come to that. It’s just as cheap to pop to the pub and have it if you know where to go for good fish.

You're not wrong. You don't get as many chips, but you can get some sort of meal deal here at the local by the river and get a sound fish, reasonable chips, and far superior mushy peas, AND a pint of Neck Oil for £19.99. But I usually lose that saving by getting a couple more pints at £6.50 a pop.

It doesn't seem that long ago you could get 'a six of chips' in the chippy - meaning 6d worth (about 3p in today's money after they did away with the ½p.). Maybe it's a bit longer than it feels <laugh>

I think, in general, the mark of a good restaurant (not a chip shop or fast food place) is how well they do fish and chips. If they make a great job of that then it sets the standard for what you can expect from the rest of their menu. If I'm served up cooked from frozen chips or fish, I won't go back.

Not near me it's not. A pub fish and chips is £17-20! A chippy is probably around £12-13 and is much better.

Chippy near me just went through the £10 barrier for cod alone a few months back. And that's small cod. Regular haddock and chips is £15 (without mushy peas). Cod, chips, mushy peas £17. Large cod, chips, mushy peas - £18.50. Even the manky chippy by the daughter's in 'Boro is £14.50 for cod, chips, and peas. You're doing well there. :emoticon-0148-yes:
