He’s a quality attacking right back. Look he can get up and down - he is actually very quick. When he puts his head down he can keep up with most. It’s just that desire to do it when defending he needs to make it 2nd nature.

So if slot wants him up and down the line we know he can do that and delivery incredible balls into the box from anywhere from byline to 30 yards out on the right.

He’s much better in that deeper role starting at the back where he can get on the ball in more time and find those long passes/through balls though. Playing him in midfield you lose that ability as hell get less time in the ball. It’s why coming inside from RB also worked but it depends how slot wants to set up tactically.

Do feel he’ll get less assists playing that inverted role but he may get more of those second assists, those balls over the top and wide to Salah/diaz who then create the goal for someone else

As much as I think he's an absolutely fantastic individual player he's not necessarily always the best player for the team. I'm not calling him selfish, because he's 100% a team player, I'm just pointing out the obvious that- In order to use Trent you have to sacrifice something.

Some times you need his spark, his ability, other times, his lack of a defined position can hurt us. He's an interesting problem to have, despite how good he is, some games trying to fit him in hurts us more than it helps us. Klopp would always play him if he could, but I think there are definitely games where the better option would be to rest him. Takes an astute manager to pick when... better than me, I can only say in hindsight when he didn't work out. <laugh>

I hope Slot has the balls to not play Trent in games where it doesn't make sense, no matter how big a name he continues to be.

Trent doesn't want to run up and down imo. It's just an opinion but I don't see the same desire as Robertson to do thst work.

Be it ego, be it fitness, be it team orders from klopp. I don't know

If he purely focused on running up and down and crossing and made.sure he was in position to do his defensive duties then he'd be a great right full.

Let's face it he is not a great right full as he stands. He's being carried by his defensive team mates to stand narrow and pass forward and being carried by salah wide as well. I hate that formation and hope we see the back of it.

He's not a 6 either as he can't get turned so his best attributes don't shine.

When we swap a big man out to rb and trent stands at cb then he can ping long ball all day and thats all fine but he won't just stand there so we get massive gaps as well.

My thoughts are this a direct fight between Bradley and trent for a place and Bradley has attributes trent needs to match while trent has a pass Bradley can't match.

I'd drop trent if he isn't willing to work.

Just need to stop the inverted / wondering about stuff, stick to the right and create from there like he was doing a couple of seasons ago. Provide the width.

It's funny because a while back some people were clamouring for him to be put into midfield, but I've always thought he's better wide.
He's world class at long-range passing and in a congested midfield he gets far fewer chances to implement his skills.
Any decent player can bounce one-touch passes off team-mates all day and he's wasted in that role. It's why he wasn't great for England - he needs runners to pick out, and only Saka gave him that option.
I've also said for ages that anything we gain from him being inside is far outweighed by what we lose in width. There were times last season when we were playing almost the entire game in two-thirds of the opposition half, because Salah always likes to come inside and there was no bugger at all wide right.

He was actually good for England, just scapegoated.

But yeah, agree <ok>

He hardly played though, did he? He was definitely better than he was given credit for when he did, but that was largely because Saka gave him a target to go for - everyone else was so static. Kane was woeful, and I can't even remember who else was up front, they were so anonymous. The starters at least - Watkins and Palmer showed some spirit and intent when they came on, but safety-first Southgate didn't give them enough time.

Played the first two games and was subbed off in both despite creating the most chances. As you said, he had no options, only Saka; if you're going to play like that, don't pick Trent. If you pick Trent, give him runners.

Agreed.

personally didn't think he played that well particularly in the 2nd but then no one who started either game did and as you say the was no runner bar the occasional move by Saka . If Watkins had started instead on Kane or Gordon instead of Foden it may have worked .

Don’t think he played well but when he came off in that 2nd game he had made most forward passes, created most chances etc so despite being poor he was at least trying to be positive.
mess probably his downfall, too attacking for Southgate.

I said during the tournament stick him in midfield with Gordon Lw, Watkins cf and he becomes a different player. He can hit those diagonals with speed and accuracy to open up the pitch and stretch things. Instead he had 1 runner in Saka who he found a couple times, otherwise foden was anywhere but left wing and Kane was, well Kane…

Thoughts on Trent getting caught on holiday signing a Bellingham Real Madrid shirt?

Alot of hack sites claiming he's made a decision vis-à-vis his contract and will be off to Real.

It's the exact opposite of what happened last year. Trent and Bellingham seen all over the place together. Bellingham liking Trent's posts on Instagram and Twitter - translated to Bellingham must be coming to Liverpool.
