Manchester City are keen to give their Norway forward Erling Haaland, 23, a new contract which will remove a reported £173m release clause and reduce fears that Real Madrid or Barcelona could lure him away. Haaland has 44 goals in 43 Premier League appearances. (Gazzetta dello Sport)

Haaland insisted on that release clause (like he had at every club he's been too) for a reason; to avoid being trapped at a club (like Kane at Spurs for example). He's protecting his own interests.

Man City are desperate not to lose him (which they will within the next two summer transfer window) so are prepared to throw money at him to remove that release clause.

I've gone on record before as saying I think Haaland has his head screwed on when it comes to this side of the game. I'd be very surprised if he signed a new deals which saw that release clause removed.

Guess it is all about the money for him if he does sign a new deal.

Definitely benefiting financially but I don't think that's the main reason for the release clause, just a very nice part of it. I think the release clause is to keep his options open. I think it's fairly obvious he'll go to Barca or Real next, I think he'll want to do Italy too but I'm struggling to see how that happens without him being agl free agent at some point. Saudi? Maybe in the twilight of his career, if it's still a thing.

Following this path, he'd have been in Germany, England, Spain and Italy. Add trophies and goals etc and that's the making a legend of the game. I think that's his end game (aka, the C.Ronaldo way)

Real Madrid have extended the contracts of France midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, 20, and Uruguay midfielder Federico Valverde, 25, until 2028, with both deals including release clauses of £1bn. (COPE - in Spanish)

Why bother with the release clause at all? I know it's compulsory in the La Liga (and realise I've just answered my own question) but £1b is ridiculous and makes the entire ruling pointless.

oyu did answer your own question. There's nothing in the rules about fair market value on release so if the player is willing to sign it then it's their problem.

The whole point of it was to ensure players weren't "trapped at a club", just seems a pointless exercise with the release clause figures we see. No one in our lifetime is paying £1b for as player

if a player signs his life away to real Madrid on 1billion release of to Chelsea on a 8 year deal then its their choice.

I'd love to be in their position to "ruin" my life liek these guys.

My point was more about it being a compulsory La Liga rule; if they insist that all contracts need to include a release clause then there should be done sort of formula to follow when calculating it. Making it £1b is just pointless; no one is paying that in our lifetime and, in all likelihood, the player will inevitably much at some point for a much smaller fee.

As I said, pointless and may as well get rid of the rule.

I think it’s more Spanish law rather than La liga specific.
But I think that’s entirely the point of putting 1bn. Clubs don’t want to lose to put stupid high one to make it almost pointless

Thought it was just La Liga, makes more sense if its Spanish law.

I understand why they just make it a ridiculous figure. Bit like quoting for a job you don't want to do; massively over quote so you are unlikely to get it but if you do, great

I agree with all of that. The only thing I will say is that to be a true legend, he needs to have great stats for his national team which given who that is, won't happen.
