You're right that the bond really helped us achieve great things ... but at the same time, we have to be better at knowing when to let go. Footballing ability has now gone down because players are getting older. And morale is already down because we're simply not good enough on the pitch and not winning games.

You can argue that Can, Gini, Bobby, Lallana all left on frees when all could have fetched some good money. You can also argue that held onto Origi and Mane for too long as well.Nat Phillips, Ox and Keita also spring to mind.

The key is not to get rid when the players are completely useless. It's getting rid of them at the right time before their decline sets in. It's tough because at the time, you think the players can keep performing and you dont expect the decline to happen ...
It's the holding on bit I don't get. You're absolutely right that getting money for players is a lot more desirable than letting them go on frees. But, you can only sell them when they want to go, you can't force them out. Have we had any scenarios like Ziyech or any amount of players who want out that we've denied the move?

We've renewed contracts on key players like Virgil and Alisson and some of the youngsters looking to retain and rebuild. I think the problem has been renewing Milner and Henderson when some/most felt that was the wrong thing to do. Other than those two, who else have we hung onto that could have been moved on? When you say Ox and Keita, you have to be specific and point to the moment they should have gone ie an offer from another club, otherwise just saying we hung onto them doesn't add up.

That's the point. You can't just say to players off you go when they are under contract and have had no outside offers.
Extending contracts and playing people when they're clearly not on their game is the sentimentalities I'm talking about, see above players quoted.

I could agree with you except the team has pretty much picked itself based on who is fit to play. Who has sat a game on the bench when they should have been playing?

Personally, I don't think we do not enough to tell players that they are surplus to requirements. Of course, we're not privy to conversations but I get the feeling that we don't want to upset any anyone by asking them to leave. Now, I'm not saying we force players out by banishing them to the u5's or anything like that but I think we're too nice.

Nat Phillips had offers over the past few years and we rejected them. The time to sell was when after 20/21 when his stock was at its highest. And I'm sure there were reports saying that clubs wanted Naby last summer but we rejected it.

Re. Ox and Naby - didn't we renew their deals? Hindsight is a wonderful thing but again, proved to be the wrong decision.

I know what you're saying, it's just that some players should have gone because they're no longer of use to us, he isn't in that category.
I was always against paying him way above anyone else, for the obvious reasons, but it's clear now that the club knew Mané was off and didn't want to lose both at once.

And understand what you're getting at, but keeping him on the same wage wasn't an option.

Tough balancing act as agree maybe need to be more harsh to get players moving.

But then we’ve also said on other tread about the moral of the squad and cohesion / fsmily feel has prob helped push us onto the heights and wins the last few years.

How often do you hear players causing issues under klopp? Not often at all, he has that talent of being able to keep a squad happy even when players maybe aren’t playing. Think lallana spoke about it previously.

Run the risk of ruining that, especially if players trying to push out cause issues or have influence over others.

Not saying one way is right or wrong, but you have to find a happy middle ground and that is very tough

Back to transfer rumours. Brighton's MacAllister's dad apparently at our game v Real and Wolves game earlier in the week. He profiles well for us.

Caicedo signed new 4 year deal. Wonder if that includes a release clause after the stuff that went on in jan. Seems an odd one
