Money talks. The quality of squad depth just wasn’t there. We simply don’t know if it was Klopp’s stubbornness/arrogance or whether he’s been hamstrung on a tight budget (possibly for good reason). His last season at Dortmund was similar to this year.

Personally, I think that we’ve just hit a wall. Gas tanks are empty, so to speak.....we haven’t been able to rotate anyone and look totally shot to pieces. The replacements to the first team are just not good enough....and this is the key point. While City can rotate 4 or 5 £50m+ full backs, we’ve run ours into the ground. Entering the season without replacing Lovren was a big mistake and our January purchases, with hindsight, look a bit desperate.

Losing Jota when we did was just plain bad luck....with him, the front 3 could have had more rest, without him, they’ve played continuously. Not good.

our squad needs a massive injection of money to improve the quality of our cover. The very best managers are constantly reshaping their squads. Fergie was a master at it :emoticon-0132-envy:. We have sadly been left wanting after winning major trophies....like I said, money talks.

The money argument doesn’t excuse 12 points from 13 games though. It’s relevant when talking about keeping pace with City at the pinnacle, but little else.

Indeed. When Virgil and Joe went out, it looked like a miracle would be needed to retain the title: being top of the league at Christmas though should have meant it would need a miracle not to even make top six, let alone top four. We still have Villa, United, and Arsenal play from the top half of the table - there are another nine points gone. And we'll be happy atm if we can take a point from the likes of Newcastle and Palace at home. There'll be at least six teams in this division that will finish above us who have smaller squads, even without Virgil and Gomez. Call this what it is : complete mismanagement of the clubs' assets both strategically and operationally.

I’m sure if you asked him he’d say you’re wrong.

As a manager you take all the plaudits when it’s going well, and you take the stick when it goes pear.

He’s honest enough to know that, and 12 points from 13 league games is ****ing woeful full stop, let alone for the defending champions, irrespective of injury issues.

Talk of his job being under threat is ridiculous, but he’s still under massive pressure to sort it out. The lack of CL football next season would be a disaster for Liverpool, financially as much as anything else, and after today he’s right up against it to deliver that, he probably needs to win the ****er to achieve it now tbh.

Or it’ll force the owners to put their hands in their pocket and invest in the squad.

No europe, good chance to proper chsllenge for title again next season with a fully fit squad, fans back in stadiums and no midweek fixtures.

To be fair our line up today included a championship full back and centre back. A national league centre back. A 35 year old who was past his best 2 years ago. Another lower prem/Championship number 10 who doesn’t play number 10 for us and a midfielder who has his mind on barca/inter.

did anyone really expect anything else from that bunch of players? Remove the name Liverpool from the team sheet and you’d say was an even line up

I said this last month.
If FSG are serious about winning more than 1 league and 1 CL (the other minor cups are nice but not the things of legacy), then they have to seriously think about their investment.
The squad lacks depth, has done for years. It just so happened that lack of depth wasn't exposed whilst the injuries were kept to a minimum. In order to get the depth you need to either create a super youth system (fast) or buy and that means spending.

FSG have always been shy when it comes to spending their own money, most of the transfers have been paid for by players going out.
I know they've spent on ground development, but isn't that paid for by bank loans which the club is paying back? Again suggest its the clubs money being spent rather than their own.

Look playing by FFP is fine is everyone else is going to play by it and is what we'd all like to make a fair game, but thats not the world football is played in and it never has been.
I wonder what FSG see as the future for the club. Are they content to just reap in the money or do they want to win things year in year out.
The lack of spending in the last four windows has exposed the club to the problems we have now.

<rofl> Mate, FSG are currently in the last stages of doing a deal to sell 10% of the company for £500m. Question - how much of that do you think is going on The Red Sox, and how much do you think Liverpool, the league's 13th biggest net spenders in the time Klopp has been here, will see of it? Do you even think they may use some of it to pay off what's left of the £100m they borrowed us (even though they were supposed to finance the new ground themselves as part of the 2010 acquisition) that we're still paying back despite the revenue crash? No, neither do I. :emoticon-0143-smirk

FSG can go f*ck themselves. Their lack of investment when we were in a position of power (when we won the CL)is disgraceful, further compounded in January when we were desperate.

With that said, the lack of investment cost us the title this season but Klopp and the players have cost us top 4. As Tobes mentioned, injuries have played a big impact but that doesnt excuse us from losing game after game. Klopp needs to find the answers and the players need to fix up.

Yep ,after this season's performance who are we going to attract in the transfer market?

Even if we could attract them, we couldn’t afford to pay them.....no European football will have a huge impact on our budget....which ultimately was never high as champions anyway. Right now we have signed all of the team up to long term expensive contracts too...so I’d expect one or two of them to go too. It’s a fall from grace of epic proportions.

milner, Gini, karius Adrian Phillips going on frees.
Ox, Matip, Shaq Origi going for transfer?

those 4 freebies must be about 350k a week in wages. Add in the 4 that prob leave and transfer fees can get for them.

Only really Gini that’s played any real game time this season so not weakening the first team by much. Squad takes a bit of a hit in terms of depth though so still end up in similar position to now. We’re still very much reliant on not suffering a number of injuries to first team players at same time.

No easy way to fix that other than either invest 200m to buy 4/5 players or get some youth players but other than Jones, not many look ready to be involved properly.

As you mentioned, only Gini is the one who plays significant mins. The rest are all deadwood IMO. Dont forget that we also have the likes of Wilson and Grujic to offload as well.

We could generate decent fees for these players but it could take one big sale (perhaps Mane) to really boost the coffers.

Personally, I think we need 3-4 players in the summer. 1 or 2 CBs, 1 MF and 1 attacker. However, all of these signings need to be first team quality and they need to be physically reliable. I have faith in our team and the manager to get back on track.

We could have sold those two (and a few others) many times over the past few years, there's been enough interest.
But we've insisted on asking an unrealistic fee for what are players we want rid of.

Think we'll have to take lower offers for them this summer.

Yep Salah is in question but he's the attacker I would want to keep the most since he's the only one who is half performing. This season shows he is our best attacker and has been since he arrived.

I don't think Mane as been that bad, I think he's suffering from opposition teams being so deep. Again, put Fabinho in DM and press to win the ball earlier Mane (and Salah) become different players

That's what I'm hoping for also. But Mane definitely has regressed this season. you only have to look at goals and chances created. He is suffering just as much as bobby.

Difference is, I think this is Bobby;s new level whereas Mane is just a bad run of form ..

hard to judge. We’re defending so deep sometimes that we’d need another 3 midfielders to fill the space left. When our defence pushes up, they’re so slow on the turn that a simple ball over the top into a channel or down the centre is enough to undo us. How we are playing now is unrecognisable to how we were playing last year and the over-riding reason why is that we have little to no pace at the back. I can’t see us picking up form from here - we’re too easy to play against now. I suspect a 4-2-3-1 will be deployed in Europe this week.

Agreed. We can't play the high line, 433, with pressing from the top with this current set of players available. As you say, we have slow CBs and a disjointed midfield so I'm hoping Klopp will finally deviate from this.

As of now:

grujic will have done alright, played in the CL etc etc. a lot of the time he's been a sub coming on in the league. A real bit part player. he won't go for big money imo. 10mil max.

wilson has done "alright" hasn't scored too many but has 10 assists so he's not really has a manager to let him free to do the glory shots. He's again never a 20mil player anymore. another small fee.

karius will go on loan again for his final year.

ojo won't give us anything, theres nothing much within the youths on loan either.

if we look at the rest of it Ox won't command any sort of fee. Matip won't either. Shaqiri is a 10mil player if theres a buyer. Origi is all but worthless.

The issue is I am struggling to find who we'd make money on we want to actually go do one.

Keita? 20 mil max, i can't see who would want him.

next year squad?

Alisson, kelleher (might be out of favour frankly)
TAA, gomez, neco williams isn't up to it.
Robertson, Tsimikas
Gomez, ?
VVD, ?
Fabinho, ?
henderson?
Thiago? jones?
Salah, elliott? (cant see it)
Firmino
Mane, jota.

we've lots of bodies who've proved themseves totally useless when coming in and stepping up to grab their chance.

Ox did nothing to help us.
Shaqiri stands about
keita, hasn't shown anything yet
Origi is absolute rubbish
matip can't stay fit
Milner is past it.
kabak at 18mil looks expensive.
minamino ran the wrong way

wijanludm is off
the rest are not worth discussing.

Klopp hasn't even thought to try robertson as a CB even in a 3 like arsenal did and stick tsimikas in.

I cannot see anything but a total rebuild with no money to do it.

Klopp won't buy a forward, certainly not any of the obvious ones, then you are looking at a pretty dire situation to buy 6? players and actually improve this.

Maybe theres 60 million in that lot. maybe a little more if we sell enough but retaining guys who can't runabout is pointless.
