I never said they were bought for cover. I said I don't think a Klopp wanted them. However, I've changed my mind now because he did the exact same thing with Fabinho and he clearly wanted him.
So this whole discussion is just people's interpretation of what 'backup' means and what 'first team' means then. I think everyone's on the same page. We've got some bloody brilliant players who'll play every match and some weaknesses in who rotates in and around them - that's where the improvement is needed.
Sort of. I don't see it as first and backup though, it's a squad and they're all in it together. Improve the squad, someone that will improve us and help us win more points/matches. Don't buy a backup that will only play when someone is injured!
That's my point though I think: Backup/squad to me, and maybe others, are just the guys who aren't a nailed on first XI starter - VVD, Alisson, Firmino, etc
Apart from Alisson, VVD, Trent, Robbo, Fabinho, Mane and Firmino, I think everyone can be improved upon in some capacity but areas well discussed - fullback and wide forward - are severely lacking in options - backups/first team/squad/whatever you want to call it. When I, and maybe others, say we need a backup FB, I mean someone who will come in and do a great job and compete for places much like Robbo came in originally to compete with Moreno.
Backup to me means someone to come in and sit on his arse watching Trent/Robbo play.

.Both Robbo & Trent could do with the occasional rest , particularly with the way we want them to play ,which they are not getting at present .

Not saying they shouldn't, I'm saying the incoming player should either challenge then for a spot or offer something different that theoretically improves the squad options.
where as i see it that you can buy someone to "do you a job" who then may grow into your team and become an important cog in it . Part of my rationale is that you don't need top class players per se just ones who top class in our team . I would argue Robbo , Fabinho are evidence of that .
On that note always makes me smile when people now go on about our "great" players when no one considered them as such when we bought them .
We should always buy players that can improve, never want us to sign a finished product that is at the point where they can only decline

Good young lads can be developed to eventually improve the team. I’m sure that’s what Klopp is trying to achieve although the young lads we’re getting are too far away atm
I don’t want journeymen either and while I do believe that we should be bidding for the likes of Maddison when he was at Norwich or the likes of sessegnon from Fulham, you have to ask yourself would they want to come if they know that they’re not getting straight into the first team. It is a dilemma
Which is why buying multi functional players is the best approach - because they are likely to get more games albeit in different positions.
As much as we love to watch the front 3 play every game, they need to be rested and rotated. And I think Klopp would like to do it more often. The issue is you buy someone purely as a back up in one position, they will hardly get any games because they are dependant on one player being rested occasionally.
But if they are bought to cover multiple positions, they will get inevitably get more mins as they will fill in for more players. .

It’s hard to judge because he’s been playing o his own up top with other young players behind him who haven’t really been creating tonne of chances for him. Always hard for a striker, play him with Salah and mane and I’m sure he’d probably look better and get some chances to try put away.
agree though, not set the world alight as yet when given the chance.

definitely. Imagine buying a guy who can play left wing or central. It means Mane and Firmino can get a rest and replace with a like for like.
Or the new guy plays on left, mane moves to the right and Salah can get a rest.
