Then they shouldn't accept long term contract extensions with substantial wage increases then, that's just having your cake and eating it.....

Yep, I agree. They got greedy. Have a feeling that we'll start to see a change in how contracts are structured. Agents will lose a ton of money if teams like ours start holding onto players!

That squad was nowhere near strong enough when stretched last season, I don't see how you can add CL footie without it being stretched further still. Especially given the way Klopp has you playing in terms of ground covered, pressing etc. You're short of bodies imo.
only cos you bought them all you greedy twats <grr>

btw - if Southampton have had no actual bids for VVD, where does the - we're showing clubs we're not to be messed with - stance come from? Have you 'kept hold' of a player? We've kept hold of Moreno as well dontcha know <laugh>

We actually rejected a bid for Moreno though <yikes>

Welcome to the modern greedy footballer lol.

And I should imagine it would be the same greed for all the ex pros in the game sadly.

No loyalty anymore. Money has ruined that.

nothing to argue with there in fact you could just as easily be talking about us & Couts.
For both clubs though the worry has to be an expensive asset has a serious hump with the club & the effect that may have.
The big difference is that we are actually holding onto Coutinho in the face of enormous pressure, where's saints pressure coming from?

Barca apparently agreed £11 deal for dembele. If true rules out Couts going as they won't have the cash to pay for him.

£110m for dembele is crazy money. No doubt potential but didn't exactly set the league alight last season and only cost £13m the season before.

the theory is the same though . i would assume if Southampton weaken their stance it will not only encourage low bids but VVD's stance and the real pressure is to show that if they don't want to sell they no longer have to.

What is their stance though? Every club says their best aren't for sale. Every club gets to keep their best players if nobody wants/bids for them.

not if offering club don't go public - did we bid for Keita ?
We bid twice.

You said 'if Southampton weaken their stance it will encourage low bids' - my question is, how is that 'weakened stance' demonstrated if they aren't publicising bids they've turned down? You can't have it both ways.

If you're talking about the Liverpool board on here, we've got mixed feelings i.e. there's no consensus at all. Some want Coutinho gone, some don't. Some think FSG should hold firm on principle, some say the only principle is get rid of a player who doesn't want to be here - it's take you pick really <laugh>

The difference between our 2 clubs, with no disrespect intended, is that you are a selling club, we aren't. I know every club is essentially a selling club, it's how the game works but we are trying to restore our status as a top club that can keep it's top players. When Torres left, he was well on the wane. Suarez on the other hand wasn't. I can't think of any other of our 'star' players we've let go.

McManaman, Fowler, Owen, Alonso and Mascherano?

bit like talking to players before making a bid often the clubs check to see what the "selling" clubs stance is prior to bidding.
The biggest differences for me are timing i.e. a lot of our stance was possibly dictated by how late in the window it was and in their case the club most interested in VVD appears to be us & we ain't popular down that way.

PS Jonny Evans £22m <yikes> why aren't ManC chucking £60m at Saints to see the response ?

Fowler most certainly doesnt count.

The others... varying degrees.

Mcmanaman was a niave 1990s bosman issue to real. We sold nothing.

Fowler was with respect utterly ****ed and we got a scandalous price for him.

Owen yes.. contract situation.

Alonso.. dunno what was in rafas head. He wanted to sell. I supect at that point rafa was concerned with injuries we dont know more.

Masch. Yes. He wanted to go to barca with messi there.

So mixed bag there over 10 years or more.
