See... I tend to agree with Tobes that he is inconsistent. He had a longer patch of playing well last year but overall he was still inconsistent.

What does make him though is even when he's totally anonymous all of a sudden he can play well for 3 minutes and win the game for us. I know of no other player who can be so quiet for 87 mins and still win a game through a moment of brilliance. Repeatedly.

I wouldn't. The money is only any good if you spend it to improve the team, and all clubs (not just ours) have a history of wasting a lot on players who just don't work out for one reason or another.
Coutinho has been inconsistent, but I think he's shown strong signs of improvement in that sense, and I'm really looking forward to seeing him in a deeper role, with the runners we currently have in front of him.
Also, it may not have escaped people's notice that I'm old-school in this regard - I think a team should keep its best players, keep continuity and continue to build a team ethic and understanding. Too many changes every year disrupts this development, imo.
I think that's spot on tbf. As you say, the dosh is only of use if you reinvest it in someone who's either equally as good or potentially better.

Torres used to.

I know you don't want to sell him, but if Barca did offer a daft figure like £100m for Coutinho would you want them to take it?

He's a quality player, but for me he's inconsistent and has too many games where he's relatively anonymous, I don't think he's worth anywhere near that amount.

£100m + will see him sold, as FSG will just cream themselves over a player they bought for £8.5m going for that 'profit', but it's not profit, is it? We have to replace him, and there's the rub. We have nobody of his creativity in the squad, not one. As for inconsistency, well the best player I ever saw wear the red shirt shirt, Dalglish, closely followed by Barnes, imo. I'm old enough to remember that Kenny could play some absolute stinkers, even as many as one in four, in his pomp. Barnes, especially for England, could approach one in five, but the thing is, even standing on the pitch, they occupied two, sometimes three opponents.

So in summary, I wouldn't sell until we had a player of his type, someone like Silva, Mata, Inniesta or Ozil (not that I'd want him - skillful but more than not anonymous), already bedded into the team. But as said, there's no way FSG will turn down £100m, and there's no way FSG will let us re-invest that £100m in the squad.

Reactions: Tobes
Rumors going around that VVD has handed in a transfer request. To be honest I think this is more a green light for Chelsea or City to come in rather than us, I can't see us risking it.

If he's handed in a TR we have as much right to bid as anyone.

BTW, do you think Lukaku is worth £95m?

They are in it for the money.
well for FSG it was obviously just an investment but imo they have been decent enough owners who have invested in the team & ground. The club itself should be self sufficient as it is the only way to ensure its future .
Another point is with the revenues available at present if you can't turn a profit the structure needs changing .

In this mad market he probably is. He'll guarantee them around 25 league goals, and he's only just 24.

I'd have preferred it if he'd have gone abroad though, as we've just strengthened a rival, but anyway.....

As far as I recall, he was playing consistently well before his injury.....and then for the last few games of the season. If he's properly fit, he'll be consistent. Although i will concede that when he wasn't fit on his return, he was not consistent at all. Prior season he couldn't even finish 90 minutes.

You lads do know he's now turned 25 and has had to ENDURE brendan rogers and constant change around him

Klopp has put him in a system that suits him and developed his fitness and stamina. HE will be by the end of this (i.e THIS SEASON) utterly different player to the one some people seem to be referring to.

Where is he at NOW not where WAS he at then?

players can develop you know. if they couldn't we would be following the utd model with mourinho buying players for now and ignoring kids.. or for that matter the Chelsea model :)

we don't have the resources to do this anyway so have to do something different.

Not this year. Yeah he's inconsistent but he helps create space and deployed deeper think he'll have a better season as can get on the ball more and look for others.

£100m would be a lot but what can you get to replace his quality? Top players these days are going at 60-70m so you couldn't even get 2 in to replace him, especially this late in the window. I'd rather have 1 Coutinho than a Matip and sigg which would cost you the same.

I still think we'll have two new players come the end of the window but have no clue who.

Of the younger lads who spent time on the bench last year, who's most likely to come through? TAA is one that could make the step up but are any of the other lads ready for regular first team action?

Also wonder how Ings is looking....he's gunna be pretty rusty I guess but essentially a new face...all injured players are back, who will have biggest impact? Hendo's stats were pretty impressive before his injury last year...perhaps he will enjoy captaincy more this year.

Think its possible that we may see Gomez get some gametime as RB as JK seems to prefer TAA as RM.

Gomez and Ings are good squad options to have this year. Something we didn't have last year at all. Mind you, there are quite a few players playing for that #9 spot. Firminho, Sturridge, Origi and Ings....
