Sterling may not be worth close to £49million but he was your main attacking threat last season. Rodgers has invested much of that money in a decent striker in Benteke but it does mean you are starting from scratch as an attacking unit. You'll recall that he sold Carroll as he wanted mobile forwards who could interlink play quickly not big lumps who can hold the ball up and head in crosses. That's what's just bought so it's a complete about face on attacking strategy!Everyone in their right mind knows we're not weaker than last year. Sterling is good but not 49mil good. Gerrard left at the right time imo. Most of his goals were penalties that I'm sure someone else would be able to score this season. Sterling got 7 goals - not hard to replace those 7 goals either.
If you do a comparison on those 2 players alone.
Sterling gone, Firmino in.
Gerrard gone, Milner in.
Not to mention Johnson gone, so we no longer have to play with 10 men or with Can in an unnatural position.
The future is very bright.
I think you could have got another season out of Gerrard but that would have required Rodgers to be a bit more tactically astute to help protect Gerrard's ageing legs and we all know he's not capable of thinking beyond the obvious.
Milner is a good player but he's not going to elevate that midfield another level.
With both Sterling and Gerrard, Rodgers has replaced quality with dependable mediocrity. He's done that before hasn't he!
Firminho is a complete unknown although I appreciate he is currently considered a worldy based on Youtube clips and desperation.
There's no doubt that as things stand, you're worse off than you were this time last year when you were equally positive about what cracking transfer business Rodgers had done.
