Bit quick to judge there. He's a better defender than Trent was at 19, imo.

I probably am being harsh but I don't see Neco ever displacing Trent - which will always be difficult because Trent is a generational talent.

With that said, we need reliable cover at RB. Neco has improved but he's still very raw and he doesnt offer much going forward.

We will probably have to sell either Mo or Mane to fund the deal, and we may have to rely on Nike to help finance it as well. Mbappe is a Nike athlete so they will want to make sure he's playing in a Nike kit (Real are Adidas).

I think this deal is actually quite possible for a number of reasons:
  • Already mentioned above but he's a Nike athlete and Nike will want to ensure he is playing in a Nike kit
  • Real won't be making any big signings until 2022 due to poor finances.
  • Mbappe will be available on a free transfer in 2022. He has around 1.5 years left on his contract so this could be the time for us to strike
  • We wanted Mbappe previously when he was a Monaco
  • Despite the huge numbers involved, FSG have shown that they are willing to spend big money (VVD, but also look at what they do at the Red Sox). We would be buying a young player who is already amongst the best in the world and is highly likely to be the best player in the world once Messi retires, and he will be the best for the next decade. He will also be an icon - a marketing powerhouse.
  • Mo and Mane are pushing 30 and will soon be phased out.

I think both will be able to carry on into their mid-thirties. I've said for a while I'd cash in on Salah (at his peak) to get Mbappe (still at the start off his curve, got a decade in him yet)

If you'd have said this a couple of years ago I'd have laughed hysterically - but our regaining a position amongst the very best of European (and therefore World) clubs makes it not quite so absurd.
However, I still think it highly unlikely that we would spend that sort of money on any one player, no matter how good, unless he was filling a gaping hole in the team that was keeping us from success. Yes, we spent on VVD and Alisson, but Klopp had identified their positions as crucial to our progress.

Fabinho has been offered a new contract extending beyond his current contract which ends in 2023.Inevetably he is going to finish his career at Anfield.

Great news. One of the best signings we have made in recent times and for a relative bargain (£40m). World class defensive midfielder and proving to be a very good centre back. We've not seen it yet but he can also play right back.

we need a poll for that.

rank the "best signings" of recent times.

Jota
thiago
Tsimikas
Elliott
fabinho
keita
Alisson
Shaqiri
solanke
salah
robertson

Ox
Van Dijk
Karius
Matip
mane

klavan
wijnaldum
manninger

There's a number there, that I just can't choose from.

I feel like mane started the revolution, but salah kicked up on another level.

Vvd took the defence from below average to one of the best in the world, but so did alisson.

We wouldn't be the same team without our flying Scotsman,

Its very very difficult

I think using the word "best" on its own is too vague. Best value? Best player? Best impact? Etc

It makes it a bit easier, but even then I struggle.

Eg best value, most would point to robertson because he was so cheap, but 40 million for mane or salah was an absolute steal.

Then again looking at vvd I think he was cheap at 70
