Covid hit Africa late February and each country seems to, thankfully, be keeping figures very low. Cameroon where the games will be hosted has a population of roughly 26,500,000. They have 6,585 cases and sadly have lost 200 lives. Kenya with a population of roughly 54,000,000 have 2,093 cases and very sadly have lost 71 lives. To put it in context that population is 10m greater than Spain and a little less than Italy. Some African countries have military regimes where people are forced to stay indoors so that helps stop the spread but overall the continent is managing it a lot better than Europe.

How accurate are the figures though? I suppose they have had the Ebola scares in the past so have some experience of pandemics.

It's the figures from the world Covid daily update site so yes I suppose as reliable as the health authority in each country. You make a good point about Ebola. Generally speaking, Africans are used to living with and being tested for diseases like Ebola and Aids so there are lots of local clinics already well established for dealing with outbreaks. I hope and pray that the African continent is also over the worst.

Just to add that it's interesting how the largely black African populations are dealing very well with the virus while here and the USA, for example, are seeing BAME individuals not having good outcomes. I know a lot is to do with general health among BAME, not just colour or ethnicity and they are more prone to diabetes, heart disease and obesity but on the face of it, there is a stark contrast.

Could be down to diet. The Western diet is full of fat and sugar so obesity rates are probably a lot higher than Africa and diabetes rates probably are to. I think they still need to do a lot of work to find out why BAME are more likely to die from Covid 19 in the UK. It could be distortion of statistics by London/south eats which have a high BAME population.

There's got to be a combination of factors because poorer white people also have bad diets. There are also significantly higher proportion per % population of BAME individuals in health care which has taken a toll. I think I read that BAME account for 14% population but 47% health care. In London about 76% care home staff are BAME. I can't pretend to know but I'm guessing, thank God, not too many have been healthy, young individuals.

I try and avoid all the doom and gloom stuff about the virus because it's really not helpful. If you read my posts here ( and I know you didn't <laugh> ) you'd see that I was being encouraging about the virus rates being really low in Africa. I did actually think about taking garlic's original post over to the Covid thread and replying there but I don't know how to do that on my phone <laugh>

You now have the extreme power of being able to get rid of Covid ...

Roma would prefer to sell Nicolo Zaniolo to Liverpool rather than Juventus, with Il Sussidario suggesting that a exchange involving Dejan Lovren could be on the cards this summer.
Swap deals are likely to be the order of the day this summer.
With transfer funds in short supply all over Europe during a period of unprecedented financial uncertainty, the likes of Liverpool will have to think outside the box if they want to sign players of Zaniolo’s ilk
