Well over 60% of Saints total income goes out in wages for their 300+ staff...... go figure!

I'm not really moaning about the signing in itself but if we're that skint there's probably other areas that are more important, could have easily got a cheap keeper in on loan as a stop gap if required.

Last published accounts put the wages bill @ c63% of income. Arguably to high!

But then on the one hand it's said (too often) we don't pay enough to attract top, top players. And, on the other hand, its a struggle to keep good players here because they can get more money elsewhere.

    Then pay yourself less.

Look at it as performance related pay...

In 2016-17, that left us a mere £70m after everyone down to the tea lady was paid.

And if you're arguing that we should move the over-30 fringe players to whom we inexplicably handed large contracts, we agree!

I don't think anyone would be happy for the club to risk it's future.

Some people have short memories, this season will mark a decade since you know what...

Yes, but buying stop gaps is what got us Carrillo. Buying a keeper that we admire and see playing for us in the future suggests that the Saints board hasn't limited themselves to short term thinking....they actually believe we will be in the Premier League in a couple of years time.

What are you doing with the other 37%?

Consider this question and others a warm up for the Solent forum

Our problem began when we started selling everyone because they weren’t on big enough or long enough contracts. We then started handing out big and long contracts to people like Long and Forster and now we’re left unable to shift them and not getting much from them on the pitch.

How can you say that about Shane Long.

Premier League defenders are not sleeping well on the eve of the season for all the running around them he does.

    I see it like this.

Imagine you run a business. You are making a nice income, but to keep things just ticking over you pay out 60% of your profit. You are left with 40% profit.

Then at the turn of the year you are told if you buy this machine (its more than you have ever spent on a machine), you will be more efficient and make more money. This machine costs a bit to run, but it will be worth it as it may go up in value.

You spend your entire budget on it. It’s crap. It doesn’t work and is pretty worthless.

Your people come to you again in the summer.

    “Boss we need another machine”
“But I just bought your a good one”
“Yep, I know, but with hindsight it was crap - I’ve loaned it out to another company”
“So I haven’t got my money back”
“No, but can we have some more - I know you have loads of money and make a tidy profit”
“No, sort out your own mess, that is why I still have loads of money”

I'm of to decorate the bedroom, as I'd rather watch paint dry today than just get frustrated that saints will not be signing a much needed striker today. See the tweets are all ready out there from the likes of Peach, Radio Solent etc, saying no incomings today at Southampton. Cant believe the club are taking another huge gamble, and you get the feeling that we really are being run by monkeys? Cant wait to hear the bollocks Ralph and Les will come out with at the Fans Forum.

Trouble is Schad, its a good move to have good players on good contracts; is it not. But, conversely, moving such players on when it suits you, then comes with that sort of restriction.
Saying and doing, ain't always the same thing.

General running costs, tax liabilities etc.
If you had to pay, say, 65% of your total disposable income out (to say bank/building society) then pay living expenses (food, power, water, genral upkeep) how far would your budget stretch. Just sayin'

Sounds like my early married life when mortgages were about 8% interest and you couldn't cope without a 10% rise in income every year. :)
