Took the kids to London a couple of weekends ago. Bank holiday, FA Cup Final/Play-off Final, plus a bike race in the centre of London, so was expecting it to be pricey. £80 for 4 returns from Howden. Thought that was pretty good going. Friends and Family Railcard.
'Senior Railcard'? I've got one of these(£30 annually). One return journey to Hull and a 1/3 off my fare and it's cleared itself
If you are travelling from York an alternative, at least whilst the subsidised bus fares are in place, is to catch the bus. £2 there and £2 back. You have to put up with a slightly longer journey and sitting on a bus rather than a train but we didn't find it too bad when we went to Hartlepool last year. We had more trouble with the train home which was cancelled because of the storms.
My kids booked us trains to Manchester and back from the Bank Holiday weekend, they couldn't get a direct train, so we had unreserved seats on the train to Donny, then reserved seats on the train from Donny to Manchester. But when we got to Donny, they announced our train was cancelled and we had to go to Sheffield and get a train to Manchester from there, so we had no reserved seats. We had a direct train back with reserved seats, but they were in Coach E and there was no Coach E, so we didn't have reserved seats on that one either. Everything seems ridiculously disorganised.
On our way back, Hull Trains, they first announced seat reservations weren't working so sit where you want, the reservation displays above head clearly were working and, at least for our seats, they were accurate. 5 minutes later someone else announced it was due to be a busy train and asked everyone to ensure they were sitting in their reserved seats. Even on the same train, in the here and now, they have no idea what's going on.
Train services are really good when they work properly, fares, seat reservations, etc. But when they don't they're awful, seems there's no middle ground that's just acceptable most of the time.
I'm married to a guard at Hull Trains. Imagine what it is like trying to find my seat at the dining table or on the sofa on an evening without her to show me where to sit!
Yep.Set off on 23 May 2008,arrived 24 May 2008. Got absolutely bladdered all day and got the return bus at 23.30 that night...Well worth the visit to Wembley though
Make more effin use of it this coming season. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
The amount of cancellations and delays I've had to put up with in the last couple of seasons have tempered my enthusiasm but I'll try and come down for a couple and do achievable 'away' days if the games aren't switched to midweeks and bank holidays
Carlisle are the kings of delays, they're just completing their 'new' east stand, twenty eight years after building it. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
