Could someone tell me why it would be such a bad idea to put Townsend on the left with Lennon or Lamela on the right?

He did start off as a left winger, no?

It's too obvious, perhaps? This football manger lark has a high degree of emperors new clothes about it, so you can't be too obvious otherwise people will suss out what a load of bullshit it really is.<ok>

Thank you Spurf. I really was beginning to wonder if I was going crazy, as if I could be the only person who'd imagine that this might work. <laugh>
I mean, he's tried both of our right wingers, Lamela and Lennon on the left, but not Townsend??!?

Spot on Spurf. I'm sure someone pretty well known in football (who I can't recall) once said football is a very simple game and you only have to do the simple things. This current breed of manager seems to think its a complex game that requires far more when I feel over complication is what is killing the game.

They've got to try to justify the money they're paid, by making themselves look like geniuses.

I sort of agree - if you have the better players then you will mostly win, whatever the tactics/selection/formation. If you don't then you need to wring every last bit of advantage out of tactics/selection/formation/fitness etc. That's when the skill of the manager comes in. It's in those situations where the manager will make close calls that the fans don't understand - because he has a lot more knowledge than us.
