http://www.caughtoffside.com/2014/0...-keeper-as-potential-hugo-lloris-replacement/ Tottenham are monitoring Cardiff City keeper David Marshall as a potential replacement for White Hart Lane custodian Hugo Lloris according to Football Direct News. French international skipper Lloris could well push for an exit this summer having previously hinted that Champions League football was key to his remaining at the North London club, with a top four finish looking increasingly unlikely. Lloris has looked assured for much of the past year and Tottenhamâs heavy defeats to the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea have been down chiefly to the defence in front of him failing to stem the attacking tide. Ligue 1 big spenders AS Monaco are said to be keen on the 27 year old, who moved to Tottenham from Lyon back in August 2012. Scottish keeper Marshall has been in fine form this term and this source, perhaps hastily, claims the 29 year old is the best goalie outside the top four. Marshall is into his fifth season at Cardiff City having previously represented Celtic and Norwich City.
We could offer Gomes a chance to return If Lloris does leave. Or if that's too much of a worrying thought then I've always rated Begovic who we nearly signed, just no keeper can match Lloris for his sweeper qualities so our defence would need to adjust and I would prefer us to sit deeper anyway and return to a counter attacking setup.
I reckon Joe Hart will be available for the right price, if not then Foster. There's enough quality 'keepers available that are English, I don't think we need to go abroad again.
Marshall's put in some impressive displays this season, but I can't see Levy bringing him in as first choice. Maybe backup and/or competition, as Friedel moves into coaching. Begovic, Stekelenburg or mayhe Akinfeev on a free.
Marshall is a class goalkeeper and certainly deserves to be playing for a top 8 or so club. I can't think of many better keepers in the league.
Certainly better than Championship class, which is where he will probably be playing next season if he stays with Cardiff.
Not yet. But soon. Marshall's benefited from having plenty to do. Would he be as good when called into action far less in a better team (except when Spurs play City, of course)?
Marshall's had a fine season, wouldn't be a bad signing if Hugo does go. Wouldn't mind the club taking a punt on Schmeichel Jnr. Would have Begovic but not sure he'd come to us after the fiasco with him prior to his Stoke move. Stekelenburg is a top keeper but seems way too injury prone. Although it looks 99% likely he'll go to Monaco, maybe a cheeky punt on Valdes could be worthwhile. Jack Butland if Stoke keep hold of Begovic, looks a decent young keeper and can only improve with minutes. Ter-Stegen looks like he'll be Valdes' replacement, otherwise he'd have been a great shout, he's alongside Courtouis as the best young keepers in the game. Maybe Joe Hart if City do indeed look elsewhere in the Summer. Foster is similar to Stekelenburg, seems to get a few injuries throughout a season.
Valdes and Puyol both available next season. One meeting with Sherwood and they will see his and our ambition.
