I would be happy with that as we need cover on the wings however a new striker is still top priority!

Yeah Boss you could have a field day with Tottenham rumours alone! Someone did make a tally before of all the players we were linked with over the transfer window. I can't remember how many players there were but it was a ridiculously long list.

Spurs a giant?? Not imo, as far as I'm aware since I've supported them, there's been no danger of a Title and have only been noted as a good Cup side through the 80's and 90's, aswell as the Finals, in general often making the latter stages. Thats dropped off in the new century, but as has been noted, the teams ahead of us have been untouchable monopolising Sky and CL money, our inferior income further exacerbated by stadium size, something thats dogged us since the 'all seater' became compulsory...thanks to a certain clubs supporters, but thats another thread! <whistle> So while lack of success is frustrating, it is 'accounted' for...excuse the pun!

Also, the bookeeping isn't that great, we posted a loss in one very recent year, nothing like our peers admittedly, but a blot on Levy's record!

It's how you define a giant club. If Spurs had had the success Chelsea or arsenal have had over the last 15 years then we would be huge. As I heard once, we are the most successful unsuccessful club in the world!!

The source is Tancredi Palmeri, CNN's italian correspondant.

Ramirez's agent Betancourt:"We had meetings with agents close to Liverpool management. But after that Liverpool didn't make any bid".

Ramirez's agent Betancourt:"The only concrete bid from England came from Tottenham:16m €,but they offered too low wages to the player"

Ramirez's agent Betancourt:"Deal w/ Tottenham didn't happen only cause of salary.Gaston won't leave Bologna if salary stays pretty the same"

Ramirez's agent Betancourt:"But we are aware that Tottenham might raise the salary offer if Modric will be sold to Real Madrid. We stand-by"

The guy is a journo but as reliable as a journo gets. He doesn't pick up on the **** that all the so called in ITK's regurgitate. He's a sort of followerer of Redknappesque types.

8. For me a 'giant' club (in Europe) is RM or Barca, maybe the Milan clubs and, I am sorry to say, ManUre.

The rest - Goons, Chavs, Mousers etc - have undoubtedly been more successful than us for sure over the last 40 years or less, but are not giants of the game!

I agree with that we certainly aren't on a par with those 3. Giant clubs in my opinion are: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man U, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and perhaps Inter as well.

His name came up a few months ago.

He did look sharp in the Olympics, and has some good set piece delivery - but he's more of a winger than an attacking midfielder (a left-footed one at that), so isn't the player we need to be signing right now. That said, he had a good season for an unfancied Bologna side, and was their second-highest scorer.

We'd have to rejig our set-up to fit him in, though - Bale at LB, with Ramirez on the left of the attacking midfield triumvirate could work, but that's a lot of shuffling and we;re more likely to have Dawson up front at this rate!

I would agree the giants of Europe are RM Barca MU Inter and AC, with 5 European cups Liverpool are close to being one of the giants, and certainly the nearest to that accolade amongst the other English clubs beside Man U. Bayern probably deserve the tag giants too, though maybe like Pool they're just on the edge of that.

We're not even a big European club club these days, lagging well behind Liverpool and also Chelsea and Arsenal.

Our failure to reach even a European semi-final since 1984 is embarrassing when I consider what a force we were in the 60s, 70s and 80s up to that awful day in Heysel.

We are currently ranked 27th by UEFA, which I'm afraid is Championship territory. Though to be fair to ENIC, it's a lot higher ranking than we had when they took over.

Incidentally this website has us ranked 40th in the world, I don't agree with much of its rankings, but it's a well-established site

Nobody considering Juve to be one of the European giants? They're up there with Milan and Inter, certainly.

Juventus is a fair shout, but their current ranking of 43rd by UEFA is humiliating for them, and on that alone, I'd have to say they're no longer one of the giants of the European game.

You can't consider someone a giant when they've fixed matches to get there.

Like a midget on steroids, looks big until you stab him with a pin and he deflates....

This is all to do with timing. If you happened to be in the top three or four when the CL started you got a built in advantage in attracting players and earning revenue and it was a really difficult job to catch up. The only way to do it was having a sugar-daddy like City. Enic are not that but have actually done pretty well in getting us up towards the top table. I don't think we've been in the top twenty in Europe since the mid-sixties to be honest.

Real, Barca, are the giants of the world game.
Giants of the English game, for me.
Since the 50s Man Utd, Liverpool late 60,s, Arse returned in early 70's. Spurs all through the 60's, early 70's, early 80's . Many great clubs had their moments,
Everton , City etc.. The days before sky and dodgy money were far more fluid.

For me its about, support, attraction, ability to buy the best, recent and past glory.
I am sure we all have different ways of measuring this.

Surely we need a winger more than another attacking midfielder at the moment? We've got VDV, Sig and Carroll for one attacking mid position but only Lennon, Bale and Townsend for two places on the wing.

Anyway, if he's asking for loads of money I hope we don't break the bank for him.

Hi PS, fair comments, but I think without any doubt we were in the top 20 in the period 72-74. The UEFA Cup was a tremendous competition then, and we won it, got S/f and then final. That's top twenty for me then, we even beat AC Milan in 72.

ENIC have pushed us up the rankings and well done to them for that, but nowhere near to the level we were in 72-74, or indeed in 82-4, IMHO.
