By definition less than 10% of these stories must be right otherwise we'd change our entire squad each season. The people we are linked with is always completely amazing. I wish I had a job where I could make up a load of rubbish, if it comes good let everyone know how brilliant I am and if I get it wrong everyone forgets about it and I carry on. But that only works for sports "journalists" (and investment bankers come to think of it).

I heard on Radio 4 recently that 85% of investment fund managers do no better than inflation. Amazing. 85% of them basically fail and yet still people listen to them and trust them with millions of pounds. The whole industry is a confidence trick.

On the BBC gossip section today Man City are "linked" with Van Persie, Ibrahimovic and Llorente.

Non-sports journalists must wonder how the hell their colleagues in the sports desks get away with it. Could you imagine a political journalist getting away with speculation like that? Or even a celebrity journalist? Imagine how often your paper would get taken to court if you kept "linking" Cheryl Cole with Jonathan Ross with absolutely no evidence whatsoever.

good point that Lenny,i wonder what the law says about this...and why is it diffrent for sport?

is it because sport is entertainment and a bit of a pantomine with it's fair share of villians?

never heard of him. Hardly a marquee signing, is it? (if it happens)

It's this average dross that I'm sick of us being linked with. players that might be "worth a stab at" because they are free. Fine for anyone with midtable expectations, but now we're tying to better ourselves and compete at the highest level, we have to sign genuine proven quality. end of.

Haven't seen him for awhile but if it's the right Kone I'm thinking of he's a bit Defoeish, good pace, tricky to handle but not really a target man striker but can also play on the wing. Not really sure he's what we need but if we can get £10+mill for Defoe and brought him in for free I guess that's an extra £10+mill in the pot for other players.

Have papers ever been sued over inaccurate football stories? I can sort of semi-create a probably-false memory of it happening. Might be thinking of Levy taking on Baconface over Berba.

Anyway I have to assume that it somehow serves the purposes of clubs for all this nonsense to be floating around. I guess it does two things that are to all the clubs' advantage:

    - Keeps people talking about football and keeps the clubs' media profile ticking over.
    - Acts as a smokescreen for any real activity.

Still seem like two fairly weak reasons when papers are openly making stuff up about your manager being about to leave or your star striker "poised" to sign a contarct with someone else.

Papers have been sued for more libelous accusations - falsely saying Christopher Jefferies was responsible for the murder of Jo Yeates or Robert Murat being responsible for Madeleine McCann's parents getting away with murder...sorry, I mean the disappearance of Madeleine McCann - than inaccurate football stories. If any paper has been sued over football stories, it;s more likely to be accusations of match fixing (and a few are suing the NotW for phone tapping, including Jenas) than transfer stories.

But is he better than Defoe? Again, defoe has banged the goals in, yet had hardly any game time. Kone is unproven. It's a risky bit of potential business for the sake of 10mill, when we have a proven goal scorer in that position.

Yeah - could you imagine how much we'd all be spunking over Defoe if he'd signed on a free last summer and never played in the EPL before? 17 goals from hardly any starts!

Can't see the point of getting in another, less proven, Defoe.

The media and football need each other. They are in bed together but football is the whore, with a dozen waiting at the bedroom door to move in should things cool off.

    I know you were YV, I wasn't having a dig mate! <ok>

but what you've stated is about right. we'd probably get about 10 for defoe, so this situation, although hypothetical, could actually become reality. - which would be very frustrating.

Lenny, you're on your own with the "spunking over Defoe" hahahaha
