It is reported in a german paper that vdv told them he wants to stay at tottenham but doesnt know what will happen. I think if a bid was rejected that would be enough to keep him

Those who are fans of Dirk Kuyt and would like to see him in a Spurs shirt next season - he's signed for Fenerbahce - for a whopping £0.8m.

Another reasonably good forward slips through the net...

Wow. For that sort of money, that's a real shame.

We would've tried to agree £450k up front, with the rest in installments based on games, goals, and Champions League qualification.

Dos Santos and Hernandez score again for Mexico, this time in a 2-0 win over Brazil.
The Man Utd striker netted from the spot after this goal had given them the lead:

    Shot or cross?

Shot for me, it looks deliberate and we know GdS has the technical ability to do that sort of thing.

I have never quite gotten why he either can't do it for us in a Spurs shirt or why he doesn't get picked. The fact that successive managers keep loaning him out or just not using him suggests that it might be an attitude problem rather than a question of his talent, sort of like a Mexican Taarabt. Can anyone provide an insight perhaps? I know he's refused to be sold to certain clubs in the last year or so right?

With Vertonghen able to slot in at LB as we've just seen aswell, makes him a versatile vertonghen.:) Looked solid and tidy enough to me which is more than can be said of Hazard. Looks like Taarabt Mark II, but with a better agent....200k a week! <laugh> Cole, Terry and Cahill all clattered him! Did anyone spot Scotty clatter Vertonghen 1st half...i thought 'oi Scott, what are you doing!' <yikes> Lukaku once again looked ****, as did Belgium and you can see why they didn't qualify, a few good individuals don't make a team.

For those that don't want to see Dirk Kuyt anywhere near WHL, Turkey would seem adequately far enough away. :)

I'm glad GDS is scoring for Mexico in friendlies, it might put a few more quid on him. :)

Cross. Firstly cos it'd be insane to try to score with that from there. And secondly if he's not trying to get it onto Hernandez's head there rather than take the "shot" on he needs talking to.

I've still not seen any evidence beyond the excellent game he had in a pre-season friendly against Norwich four years ago to think he's anything special. Thought his World Cup performances were hugely over-rated too.

(Which is not to say that I do still hold some wild, unjustified optimism that he might turn out to be a really good player for Spurs. I am a football fan, after all).

Shot or cross? - Watching that footage you can't see him even look up, so I don't think he knew what he was doing either, he doesn't look up, just clips the ball in a general direction...nobody chips the keeper from there....shot?....my arse!

  11. Certainly not a shot IMHO although more than happy to acknowledge it as such if it plonks a few more quid on his transfer value.....
Wish the Vertonghen deal was wrapped up - he looks more than useful and versatile. Was hoping that something would have been arranged during the Belgians trip to London,

As for Robert Green - no thanks, even on a Free!! A decent keeper, but not commanding and at 32 with 2 other 'experienced' keepers on the books already, I would prefer to go for someone younger. Krul, Vorm or Ruddy all preferable for me.

Agreed about Green. I don't think he is a bad keeper but he just doesn't seem to have the confidence or the 'swagger' that the top keepers, the likes of Hart, Neuer, Casillas etc. have. When you look at his body language it just seems like he's never fully confident in front of the net. Whether he has always been that way I don't know, but I think it's more likely the product of his mistake in South Africa. I don't think he would come to us as a second choice anyway, especially considering we have Cudicini as a more than adequate backup to Friedel.

We need a young keeper to challenge for the no. 1 shirt, not a 32 year old backup player.

Personally I think a 32 year-old back-up keeper is just fine. He's got years left in him. And he is a very good keeper. Apparently his attitude is excellent too.

I'd be more concerned as to whether he'd go anywhere as back-up. Especially back-up to someone who hasn't missed a game for 37 years or whatever. Doubt it.

If we don't renew Gomes and Cudicini's contracts, we're going to need to sign two keepers this summer - there is nothing more terrifying that spending a whole season hoping Friedel doesn't pick up an injury because the next keeper in the pecking order is Ben Alnwick...

Similarly on the striker front - our only recognised striker at the moment is Defoe.

Well at least he can't complain about game-time now! (Oh wait, Harry'll just play Kane to wind JD up <laugh>)

  16. I thought I read that Cudicinis contract WAS being renewed, HBIC...... that would suely take some of the pressure off?

I agree about Green, but bringing in a promising young keeper to sit on the bench all season is a sure fire way to demotivate him. What we really need is someone better than Brad who can be our number one for years to come.

The Metro's suggesting that we've tabled a £5m bid for James Tomkins from West Ham.
The rumour seems to have come from nowhere, but it would make some sense, if it were true.
I wouldn't expect them to accept that, though.

  19. A decent young player, but would make more sense if we were not just about to secure the transfer of Vertonghen..... We hardly need another CB if that is actually happening and we are are also well covered for DM, which is Tomkins alternative position.

If King retires and Nelsen leaves, then it might make sense, especially if Caulker's allowed to go out on loan again or Gallas also goes.
Lots of ifs and buts, I admit, but the squad situation's a little up in the air at the moment, for me.

In semi-related news, Bassong's been linked with a move to one of three clubs in today's Guardian.
Monaco, who finished 8th in Ligue 2 and whose relegation the previous season I somehow missed, Lokomotiv Moscow to join Pavlyuchenko or Rubin Kazan, to join some large piles of money and Obafemi Martins.
