Napoli Wages for 2009: 31m, 2010: 38.7m (both Euros I think) Athletico 2009: 67.5m, 2010: 61.5m (Euros) Spurs 2009: 60.5m, 2010: 67.1m (Pounds)
Hallelujah and brilliantly played ENIC, a genuine coup getting in the captain of France, fantastic stuff. Now a striker, and it's been a good window.
I just think that forming a table comparing teams across Europe is always going to be a little bit of a creative act. It's interesting and everything and I'm sure it's as accurate as it's possible to be but fundamentally you're comparing apples to oranges. If Shaktar or Valencia or Benfica suddenly joined the EPL I would not be expecting them to finish as high as Spurs have in recent years. Plus certain teams will do better in Europe just cos they're such horrible places for the away team to travel to (Greece, Turkey etc). Put it this way - the stuff you mention comparing Athletico Madrid's achievements to Spurs' was a much more convincing argument to me than seeing them much higher up in that table. And anyway - the other team Spurm mentioned as being akin to Spurs is way down the table so if you want to use the table as evidence you have to accept that Spurs are way ahead of Napoli if anything! In any table like that Celtic and rangers will always be in the top 60 or 70 clubs in Europe. Wouldn't be surprised if there are at least ten to fifteen teams better than them in England alone at any one time. Same could be said of a team like Copenhagen or Rosenberg, couldn't it?
So we sell Modric & VDV and end up with dembele & dempsey, thats really going to take us to "The next level", desperate signing at the last minute of dempsey as they have realised we have a lack of goals in the squad.
Dempsey would be great. Not overly impressed with his treatment of Fulham but looks like we'll be getting a top player for very good value.
Now things are looking up, DEmpsey's a player I've been wanting us to sign for a while. Get him in, then it's been a good window, and you know what I'll be going back to the Lane soon, and I'll be prising ENIC big-time for their brilliant work this summer. Don't **** it up now Spurs, get Dempsey in and the job's a very, very good one.
We knew Mods was going and by the look of it, Rafa wanted out as well - if only for different reasons. If we have got Sig, Dembele and Dempsey as well as securing Ade, then I reckon that's pretty decent business. And grabbing Dempsey and Sig from under the noses of the Mousers is worth it for entertainment value alone.
Getting Dempsey in will be good for us and seriously piss off Liverfool .... this is turning out quite nicely, still wish Berb was coming back to the Lane though.
Fair enough Lenny, we agree to differ. I rate that table very highly as a source of the current standing of European clubs. We are in the championship tier and that's because we're not one of the big current European clubs - neither are now we one the big European clubs including the all time achievements in Europe The last twenty seven years has been a barren period that has seen us sink a long way down the rankings since that great night in 84.
Depends where the club wants to be, as Dempsey is a good player but why are we waiting until now to sign him as we wasn't in for him before when it was clear he wanted to leave, so it strikes me as panic buy.
I couldn't give a monkeys about pissing off Liverpool, I want Dempsey in because he's a quality player, and a good fit for us. He can replace VDV's goals, and unlkie Defoe or Kane can lead the line, not brilliantly, but compared to them astoundingly well.
