He's taking a step up of two positions in the league. I'm sure he'll cope. Look, I get (to an extent) what you're saying, and I'm not saying he's proven. He's not as yet. I do however think you're being very negative about him for some reason (I can't quite work out what - perhaps the fleeting remnants of a doomed affair with Sherwood is upsetting your emotional balance?). Although there's a bit of a backlash now, you'll not find a single Saints fan (with regular mental faculties) that wanted him to go. Yes, you're a bigger team, and it's a bigger job, but surely that tells you something? No? Of course there's a chance it might not work. After all, if you employed Guardiola, there's a chance it might not work. All I'm saying is that yes, it may feel like a risk, but it's a hell of a lot more of a calculated risk than it might seem. I hope he does well. The game needs more progressive, intelligent managers like him. It means the demise of the Allardyces, Redknapps, Moyes and their other clogging friends will come all the quicker.
"It means the demise of the Allardyces, Redknapps, Moyes and their other clogging friends will come all the quicker." INCOMING (could be a PuLarIS missile attack) !!!
That may have been dropped in on purpose, but you can't expect a Saints fan to be supportive of ole saggy-face.
Thats a low blow! I'll let Redknapp go as if I defend Redknapp it will just start another big debate and we don't want that! but at least you never mentioned premier league manager of the year, Pulis! I could be acting harsh and I may have called this completely wrong so in a years time, if all goes to plan , Pochettino will be leading us into the champions league and Koeman will be lifting the FA Cup for saints and a top 8 finish. I'll leave that, at that, for now as world cup fever is kicking in and Spurm will think I live in Glasgow and about to top myself If I get anymore negative!
Redknapp clogging? I really wouldn't put him in that company. He's a very old school manager, I don't deny that, but his teams generally try to play good football. QPR might be something of an exception, though.
Boss. Come on man. Yes that's true - there is a greater chance he'll fail than not. But then that's true of ALL managerial appointments! It's true of ALL signings! Doesn't mean that ALL appointments and signings fail. Just that they're all likely to. Stop being so bloody negative! You don't know. Just keep repeating : "I don't know". So why not, at the very least, be as neutral as I sense you know you should be and stop over-reacting to other people who might be claiming Pochettino is gonna be a messiah or whatever. Come on! Cheer up! This is not a time for predicting failure (and acknowledging that failure is a high possibility is not the same as expecting failure). Many Saints fans, even those who are sensibly tempering some of the hype over Poch's achievements at Saints, seem gutted that he's gone. Le Tissier's Laces knows a hell of a lot more about him and his teams and his methods than us lot so why not just accept what he says at face value and assume that he might be talking some sense when he praises Pochettino?
...and on the subject of the transfer window I really liked the look of Rakitic today. Cost 2.5m Euros back in 2011.
Lenny you do realise at the start of the season, HIAG started a thread along the lines of "season predictions" and I put down saints to finish top 8 and that was because of the impact Pochettino had made and I knew his methods would work with the saints players. Maybe I've given the wrong impression, but I'm not trying to suggest Pochettino is clueless or not a decent coach as he is clearly a very capable manager for mid table teams, in terms of being proven. But proven methods I would only accept (overall) if he had years of experience, or had taken his methods to a high pressure job, at a bigger club, and he hasn't. Is he the man to step up and manage a bigger club and make his methods work, I can't say for sure either way but I don't believe he is the right man and yes it irks me when I hear "hes proven" or "he is special" .........There is only one special one! I'm not happy about his appointment and I'm not excited by the future under his management but if he proves me wrong then I'll have no issues praising him as I'm not going to be boasting if I'm proved right, I'm not someone that goes around saying "I told you do" but my honesty is clearly making me sound overly negative and that I need to cheer up! but I can assure you my friend, I'm not about to top myself, even with me living in Scotland!
From the point of view that Poch favours a similar method to AVB I am not too excited by his appointment. I have said before that I would prefer a Dutch/German/Swedish manager simply because their playing methods are more 'English', nevertheless like Boss I am happy to be proved wrong but if we start producing 'technical' boring football, unless we win the league I will be in there moaning with the best.
It comes down IMO to whether he gets the squad to buy in to what he's doing. No doubt that's true of every manager, but it goes double with a manager whose MO(PO) is to increase fitness. I think the prospects of this are decent, if for no other reason than that Spurs have so much competition for spots. The fact that Southampton played more attractively than Spurs last year should also help.
Bloody hell guys usually I'm Mr Pessimistic when it comes to Managers (Harry aside! ) yet I've somehow found myself rather excited with the Pochmeister, don't get me wrong I had 2 or 3 others I'd have put higher up the list for us to get but I think Poch could be a good fit. If he can get us playing anywhere remotely near what his Soton side did then we should be in for a bit of enjoyment. All due respect to Soton, with 1 or 2 lads aside, most of our lot are a class above (when they want to be!) and so you'd like to think Poch will be able to take the style of Soton and develop it further with our boys. Yes we are a step up for Poch but Martinez and Rodgers implemented their styles on bigger clubs when they stepped up and thus far it's worked out pretty well, what's to say Poch can't do the same?
If he get's us playing like the saints did i will be more than pleased, has Levy done the right thing this time?,only time will tell
Martinez and Rogers had been in the English game far longer than one season possible success stories.
I have said before managers often do more harm than good. We have a strong squad of players but if you insist on making them play within strict guidelines (AVB) or ignore the fact that defensive midfielders are essential for a team like Spurs (Sherwood) especially when we have a couple of good ones. Consider the players qualities and then pick a balanced side who can play together, add a couple of set piece strategys, and keep them all happy. Simple When do I start?
Spurf your time will come. I agree that we should play to the players strength not to a rigid system . Please do not shout me down but is this not what Harry did ? I think Levy wants a system that will enhance performance over ability as we have not the quality any more of the teams above. Poch's downfall will be we have no real game changers .
Yes we may , but there is a good chance we may have none. This I see as our weakness , the teams above have 3 to 5 . At one time we had 3 so I feel Poch or anybody has little chance to achieve the Holy Grail .
Rodgers only had a season's worth of top flight experience though, the rest of his career was spent with Watford and Reading and if I remember rightly, he was sacked from one of them.
