Our spending is not even in the same league as the likes of City and Chelsea, one was spending more on wages than it earned it revenue and the other has had over half a billion put into the club and written off by the owner. Anyway, I can't see any reason why Joe Lewis would stop treating it like a business now so this spend up is either being offset by Bale's sale in the future or an attempt to speed up our stadium funding by getting us CL football. Eitherway, it's not a blank cheque he's given to the club but I'm glad you're enjoying it all the same, just don't expect this every year
It's being reported today that Real have cooled on signing Bale as Ancelloti has said he is not part of his plan's this season, however, Manure are still interested, would he go there, with a question mark over how well they will do this season?
Liverpool target Christian Eriksen declares interest in move to Tottenham Tottenham is an interesting prospect for the Danish international The future of the Ajax midfielder, who is attracting interest from a number of European clubs, remains uncertain after impressing in the Eredivisie last season. And Eriksen spoke today about the possibility of joining former Ajax team-mate Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane. "Tottenham are a great club," he told BT.dk. Eriksen has been one of Ajax's best performers in recent years The 21-year-old in action for Ajax in last season's Champions League âIt is good club which is interestingâ "I know this because of Vertonghen. It is good club which is interesting. "But there has not been anything yet." The Danish international currently has one year left on his contract with the Dutch champions and coach Frank de Boer is resigned to losing one of his most valuable players. And Eriksen believes his future will be sorted out in the next two weeks, with interest set to intensify. Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen celebrate their title win in Holland "We'll find out in two weeks," he said. "There are to my knowledge no negotiations right now either with a new club or Ajax." He added: "There are Russian clubs that have called and made bids for me. "I did not take much time to refuse. I would like to join one of the five major leagues. "I have the view that I do not want to go to Russia at my age. I do not look at the money."
Hi Spurm, I agree. So far we've spent the TV money in our net spend. But a lot of Spurs fans on various sites are getting excited at the prospect of us having a net spend of a lot more than the TV money. I'm one of those that would be excited by that, though as remarked before, won't be 'jizzing and coming' and all the rest of it We'll have to wait and see, but IF we do go on a big net spend, then I'll be interested to see if some people who decry the Chelsea/City route will be happy if we do it, and if they are, how they reconcile the apparent contradictions in such a stance.
Re the comments that tots has made, there's this fron The Telegraph. I also have the feeling that there will be no deal this year as Real are seemingly balking at Levy's demands.. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...lotti-as-interest-in-Spurs-forward-cools.html
Hi YV, I agree our spending is nowhere in the Chelsea/City league. More's the pity IMO, as I want us to be successful like them, particularly Chelsea. However, IF we start exceeding net spend considerably AND 'the anti-BB (billionaire benefactor) brigade' welcome that, then the old quotes about principle/amount come to mind. eg the one often attributed to George Bernard Shaw Anecdotal dialogue GBS: Madam, would you sleep with me for a million pounds? Actress: My goodness, Well, I’d certainly think about it. GBS: Would you sleep with me for a pound? Actress: Certainly not! What kind of woman do you think I am?! GBS: Madam, we’ve already established that. Now we are haggling about the price. (This dialogue is also attributed to Winston Churchill). As I've often said my main gripe about ENIC is that they've run us as a business, I will be delighted with them if they start overspending. Finally we might start outperforming Arsenal and Chelsea, and be something like the glamour club I started supporting in the 60s, when we were the big spenders and I loved the stars and glory that bought for us. Oh and we might also get the new stadium sometime this decade, another major gripe of mine.
Fair comments Spurf. I do worry too much, but Spurs is such a massive part of my life, and I am a worrier. So the two together are a corrosive mix. They're also a joyous mix, as I get so much pleasure from any Spurs victory be it against Man Utd or Peterborough Utd. They are still Peterborough Utd, aren't they?
Can see another £10 million in outgoings which wouldn't make our overall spending ridiculous. If we keep Bale I think we only need to spend the TV money. On a brighter note those mugs up the road are hinging on this Suarez transfer. I will laugh my head off if it goes right to the wire and falls through.
http://www1.skysports.com/football/...y-admits-move-back-to-america-came-as-a-shock Clint Dempsey admits he was not expecting to leave Tottenham this summer when he reported back for pre-season. The American international finalised a move back to his homeland earlier this month when Seattle Sounders signed him after terms were agreed with Major League Soccer and Tottenham. Speaking on Sky Sports News he said: "I had two years left on my contract at Tottenham and going back there in pre-season, I thought I was going to be there but I guess it is just timing. "The right situation came along and MLS and Seattle Sounders, they moved mountains to get me back and I wanted to come back whilst I could still do it, I wanted to come back and make an impact." With David Beckham having left MLS, many are predicting Dempsey could have a similar impact on the league. "I don't know what my effect will be, I am looking forward to getting back and playing more the South America style, having that creative freedom and getting on the ball," he said. Dempsey was asked whether his former team-mate Gareth Bale would be following him out of White Hart Lane. "He has been great for them and is a great player, and really helped our push for the top-four last season - but I don't really want to comment on that."
It's not hypocritical to not want us to become a team that spends well beyond our means but enjoy a summer where we've most of our transfer incomings done early. We haven't suddenly become a billionaire's vanity project, we're still run as a business so I don't see why anyone that doesn't like the thought of us becoming a money club would be concerned by an increase in spending.
To put it in perspective, our net spend this summer isn't far away from what City spent on a 4th choice Brazilian midfielder.
Aswell as the tv money and sales, don't forget the 10m a year new kit deal or HP's renewal, we've had some commercial money in this year. Moans about not buying enough players in previous windows or settling for late cheaper ones more to the point, might suggest an underspend too, money was there for Moutinho for example which wasn't spent.
Exactly and if just to prove it there was the Damiao deal that collapsed on the last day of the January window. The money has always been there for the right signing at the right price but this summer has seen us throw caution to the wind on a couple of transfers.
I think it was George Bernard Shaw, actually. Supposedly during an encounter with a prostitute in London...
AVB has ruled out selling JD and Sig. Reports in Croatia state that we're close to signing Halilovic Can't find quotes on this, because I'm not paying to read the times online! IMO, if this is true, it's to get one of the prem clubs to show more interest.
Do we need to spend that amount on a 17yr old playmaker....one in his early/mid 20's able to do it now would be a more pressing requirement.
