The problem is that he doesn't stay out there enough, drawing defensive players wider, thus creating space centrally for our other players to exploit. if he's going to play out there, he's got to stay there and ping crosses in. He doesn't have the pace to beat people down the wing, so if he can hug the touchline he'll get more time on the ball, rather than being under pressure. But he just doesn't do it as he naturally likes to cut in.
He stayed wide enough last year I think. Now he has the more attacking and pacier Rose to team up with. I'd like to see: Paul cap Townsend Chadli sig Soldado That way we've got a change up (switch sig and chad) without using a sub. If still not working then sig off, chad left, Paul further up and slot tommy in in his preferred pos Despite being a fan I've not seen enough from dembele this season so far, seems off form Did anyone else think Carroll had bulked up a bit over summer? I was watching on tvcatchup so I wasn't sure.
Hi Spurm, I'm not tactics guru either, and I often wonder if AVB is either. We were all told how he'd play 4-3-3- with two wingers- how often has he? To me, he seems to want the FBs playing as wingers a lot of the time. No problem with that. Then just make sure you get the best out of your wingers by letting them switch and roam. Then again what do I know? I tend to talk of front 6s, following Jol, and as long as we have Cap Paulo and Soldado on the field, who to me are the stand out players, then let the rest play as per AVB's ideas. I think Townsend may soon join the top trio, but he might need to be on the bench today, as he played Monday and Thursday.
I think with who we've got to choose from, we're being far too generous with Sig. It's not like he's been amazing in one position, then moved to another and been poor. He's been distinctly average where ever he's played and someone else deserves a chance now. It winds me up that Townsend (who I've never actually been a massive fan of, but has proven me wrong) is working his balls off to get in the team and is in good form, yet sig who is currently doing nothing of any use takes up one of the first 11 places.
I never expected him to play with 2 out and out wingers. He didn't at Porto. It's a bit of disarray at the mo though as his key player at Porto was hulk who played a sort of wide/free/striker role. For spurs that position was bale. He had a deep lying playmaker (moutinho) and we don't really have that player either other that Carroll. Then he had one out and out winger (forget who) with 2 attacking fullbacks. We have those 3 The midfielder on Hulk's side needed to be intelligent and good enough to move right when hulk went elsewhere, for us that man would be paulinho (IMO). If bale was staying I could see him going for the exact same setup, but at the moment I dunno what he's going for. My guess is he wants to play like his Porto team but he doesn't quite have the personnel yet
we couldnt play 4-3-3 as we only had one winger, two strikers that are not great at playing on their own, no wingers that can score and Gylfi and Dempsy to accomodate and Bale being amazing in the middle. This year we will switch between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 imo. Chadli, Townsend and Lamela/Hulk/Willian can all play goalscoring winger for the 4-3-3. In fact we are most suited to a 4-3-3 at the moment with Paulinho getting forwards, as we dont have a proven N0 10. (Holtby is unproven but I wold like him to get a chance)
isn't Townsend left footed?! hence why he is playing on the right and cutting in? I was going to suggest that formation you've just mentioned. Like you say, it'd be nice to try out for 25-30 mins.
Jeez we have a lot of players. Holtby isn't fit enough for today but I too would like to see him no10
Will be a tight game and I fear that we will struggle to break them down. For all the signings we have, we don't have a proper playmaker. Soldado can only score if he receives service.
It's a shame Holtby wasn't fit over preseason. As a result, I think we're still using the start of the season to look at 1 or 2 players (Holtby's position/s and others' positions) to assess them before deadline day. I'm still convinced that there's going to be 1 or 2 surprises going outwards, when we get in the ones on our radar.
I'll be very surprised if we get anything today, and I think you'll have a comfortable win. My reasoning is based on the fact that Ashley Williams and co. are below par, and have been since our cup win last season, coupled with the fact that the service to Bony has been poor, and things have not clicked up front yet, so I'm going with a 2-1 win to you lads. When we do click though, I think we are going to give some teams a good pasting! ............
We're still far from comfortable with one another yet, either. We're still yet to see convincing service to Soldado and we're still a little way off of "clicking" yet too. Lots of new faces. Whatever happens, today's game will be quality. it's a real shame it's not on the box.
A late, unexpected and undeserved goal will see us win 1-0. It'll be a game short on enjoyment and we'll moan about it until Wednesday. COYS!
This is what I am hoping for, as this is our best chance of getting anything at WHL today, as when all your players and rumoured players come in and settle you are going to give a lot of teams a hiding this season. Should be a good attacking game from both sides with a lot of new faces in both teams still coming to terms with each other. Would snatch your arm off for a point right now but think you will just edge it 2-1
I watched your Europa game, and you looked bloody good to me! ...Still will be a great game with both teams playing good football!.................
Here's our team - Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Rose; Capoue, Dembele, Paulinho; Townsend, Soldado, Chadli. #THFC
