To: Clint Dempsey From: A contrite RWAEB While I continue to feel that you are not really a Spurs player, I ought to apologize for occasionally joining in the general derision directed your way by my fellow posters (not to mention frequently instigating it). You are not, it is true, Spurs player. On the other hand, you have the admirable quality of getting the ball into the net when we desperately need one. It certainly looks like our season would be dead and buried without your goal and assist yesterday. I also enjoyed the first goal as the best evidence I've yet seen of your quality. How many players would have tried that half-volley lob for fear of missing by a mile? How many would have taken a touch and given someone just enough time to scramble it away? You showed great judgment and excellent touch on a very tricky shot. Also, on your assist, I was expecting you to do what I think most would have done, which was to bang it futilely at the keeper. Watching you correctly slide it across to Ade even though there was a risk of a defender knocking it away has kept our season alive and made me sincerely grateful, In newfound if all-too-fleeting apprecation, RWAEB
Corrected for you mate!!!! Seriously though, every time we write the guy off he comes back with a goal to shut us all up..... He deserves credit for perseverance at any rate.
Dempsey is our 3rd top scorer overall and 3rd top scorer in the league. Without his goals we would be buried. The question is whether someone else playing in his place would have yielded more goals or more goals for others
Good performance yesterday, even if it was aided by that **** Adam's red card. Hard to say who MOTM was, no one really stood out and took control of the game in my opinion, it was a solid team effort but I'd say Dempsey edges the vote due to his goal and assist. Dempsey always seems to find a goal when we desperately need one and fair play to him. Now we have to hope Wigan can pull another cat out of the bag tomorrow. Just hope they're not suffering from a FA Cup hangover!!!
Take a look at THFC's updated table at http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/211377-Tottenham-Hotspur-v-Sunderland-Match-History-1898-2013. Dempsey and Gylfi are 2/3 in goals/assists per minute. I tend to think Gylfi's a wonderful player who shares Dempsey's talent for creating goals with excellent defensive work. But Gylfi seems to elicit a certain lack of enthusiasm from many as well.
I like Gylfi, he started slowish but from the time he finally got his first goal he has impressed me.
Right after we bought him I said we shouldn't have bought him. But if scores or assists for the winner against Sunderland, and it gets us a CL spot, I'll say he was a great buy.
Forget assists, they mean diddly squat. You can put a ball at the feet of a striker 2 yards out and he misses, then you've assisted for a miss haven't you? How many assists for misses have players had? Stacks. Also if a keeper rolls the ball out to a player who runs the length of the field and scores with nobody else touching the ball then has the keeper assisted? Once the ball has left the "assisters" foot he doesn't know what's going to happen to it does he? It's he who scores who counts, balls in the net.

I agree. A "clear chances created" stat might be better. But what would the rules be on what was included? Mazy dribbles followed by being fouled? A pass that leads to a long range shot? Its subjective. Assists just get used because they are an easy stat to compile.
