Dempsey has been completely ineffective. They have kept Bale out of the game. The system needs a reshuffle.

    More free-kicks please.

Don't worry boys, we have spells like this in many games, our problem is if we don't take advantage we usually let the other team in eventually, much like yourselves we rarely perform for 90 minutes. Combine that with your boys probably coming out of half-time with a rocket up their backsides and I feel this could be your classic game of two halves - much like our game at St. Mary's, except we didn't capitalise!

You wouldn't think so. We look so narrow. 4-4-2 will unlock this Saints team. More width.

A fairly subdued 1st half, with Southampton having the better chance to take the lead.

Totally confused about why Defoe was penalised when clear through. The "ref" seemed to signal for a push but clearly there was no such thing. Please don't tell me refs don't decide the league. Maybe we don't deserve it but lots of teams get 1-0 wins they don't deserve.

I have no idea why we persist with him. he offers us so little over 90 mins. If "scoring important goals" is what the general consensus of him is, then he needs to be an impact sub, not a starter.
We need more creativity to unlock Saints.
    Get Carroll on AVB!

Poor first half and our shape sucked, but Clattenburg's been absolutely bloody awful. Failed to spot a number of clear fouls and prevented Defoe having a free shot at goal by inventing an offence.
Why is he still allowed to take charge of our games?

What was the idea behind starting an unfit Dembele? Anyone? We've got other players capable of filling that role, so that was a poor choice, for me.
Hopefully our change of shape will bear fruit in the second half.

Yeah I'd like to see the shift to 4-3-3, would have initially liked Holtby for Dempsey but obviously thats no longer an option so Carroll for Dempsey for me. Don't think it'll happen straight away though.

Poor first half, looked like we were just starting to wake up as halftime approached though. We had a great opportunity to score an undeserved goal taken away by Clattenburg, cheating ****.

    Dempsey's ****e.

You need to draw our full-backs out wider to open up the channels to expose Hooiveld who makes Mertesacker look like a 100m sprinter, the one time Defoe ran at him he left him for dead.

    But don't tell AVB. ;)

So the long balls up to Defoe are looking killer, Dembele's injured, Benny's trying to prove AVB right in his doubts about him, no-one can get their foot on the ball, the crowd are silent and Bale (as everyone else) is anonymous. On top of all that I suddenly felt a chill as I considered that Holtby, who looked classy and attack-minded in his first couple of cameos looks not so much like VDV but Steffen Freund. Something about the way he scuttles around and loves a tackle.

To be fair I think Southampton are doing a very good job against us. For so long we've struggled with teams that come to WHL and get in our faces like this. Even when we had Modric and VDV we struggled to unlock some mid-low table teams which were willing to work hard and be organised. And we're even less creative now...
