A great day to be at the Lane and an awesome second half performance and an outstanding result. Full marks to management and players for today, that was more like it. And good to see Harry Kane get off the mark, credit to him for persevering, these past few weeks have shown he has the attitude to really make it in the game. COYS
I agree, but simply running more isn’t necessarily a bad idea. There have been a couple of successful basketball coaches who did exactly that. Get your team’s fitness to a higher level, play at a higher pace, and you have an advantage. The good news is the squad looks pretty strong. We have to pick up as good a right sided CB and as good a DB as possible in January, because we have at least decent, and often good, cover elsewhere. Even just getting one would help, since Alderweireld and Dier can play each other’s spot. The Guardian "Manchester City’s start to the season is beginning to feel suspiciously like it might have been a deception. It was easy to be reeled in after five straight wins but back-to-back defeats have changed the landscape at the top of the Premier League and, having begun the new campaign so exhilaratingly, their supporters must be startled about the speed at which everything has started to unravel and the shortcomings from last season have resurfaced. It is certainly difficult to recall too many occasions since the Abu Dhabi money started to flood in that the modern-day City have defended so chaotically or looked so vulnerable. Manuel Pellegrini made a mistake entrusting Willy Caballero ahead of a new, experimental defence that was missing its usual centre-halves," Was there another team involved in that City game? "De Bruyne was a fraction offside but it was nothing like as clear as the assistant referee’s error in the build-up to Tottenham’s equaliser." So Man City are entitled to be aggrieved because 100% of their goals were wrongly allowed, as opposed to 50% of Spurs. Mmmkay.
Well done on a terrific performance. Hope you have many more like that this season Now you can concentrate on winning the Europa League to secure a Champions League spot. Hope you get to the final along with Athletic Bilbao. PS I must be the only Saints fan who likes you. I do not know why so many of my fellow Saints dislike Spurs and it is not something that stems from issues revolving around MP. and certain. I think it is something deeper and I would hate to say what it is. Most prefer the horrible Chelsea to Spurs winning.
There's three possible scenarios for this... i.) Lingering resentment from when Hoddle joined us in 2001 and promptly went back for Dean Richards ii.) Lingering resentment that your previous owners waived the 25% sell-on fee you had for Gareth Bale for a £3m cash payment iii.) Even though Liverpool and Man Utd have dismantled your squad for the past couple of summers (with Arsenal doing their bit to help out) we're seen as a team that can be overtaken while the others can't which makes us the main rivals...even though just two points separated you and Liverpool last season
"I do not know why so many of my fellow Saints dislike Spurs and it is not something that stems from issues revolving around MP. and certain. I think it is something deeper and I would hate to say what it is." Hoddle. Arry. Pochettino. A heady brew linking both clubs (just on managers alone) to arouse a certain type of supporter.
Well I've had some time to allow the dust to settle after todays game before commenting and I think that was easily our best performance for some considerable time. What stood out for me was how we defended and maintained a dogged discipline right from back to front. Everyone mucked in (apart from Eriksen who was swiftly moved to the middle where he's more effective and arguably Son out left) and that effort paid off. For me, Eric Dier is becoming a hugely important player for us. I was so impressed with his performance today. For someone so young, he read the game brilliantly and was constantly intercepting and breaking up Man City moves. He is proving to be a wonder find that I think even if Bentaleb and Mason are fit again, it would take a seriously big drop in form to justify replacing him (unless he needs resting). Dier was clearly my man of the match today but I'll allow Lamela that accolade purely for the fact that he too probably had his best game in a Spurs shirt today (long overdue) and his performance, goal and recognition may just do him the world of good. Let's hope he starts to blossom from here. Thrilled to see Kane got his account opened finally. Every time he plays he gives absolutely everything. We are so lucky to have unearthed this kid. Seriously... he is only going to get better and he conducts himself with such maturity and self-assuredness in interviews that he's a credit to the game. We need more like him around than these money grabbers that has ruined the majority of players reputations. Toby is also due a mention because our backline looks far, far more assured since he came along and that's no coincidence. Great to see him score today too and with another good performance by Son and an impressive cameo by N'Jie, I'm looking forward to seeing more from him. Not going to get carried away but I think a corner has been turned here and hopefully, we can push on. You could see the confidence spread through the team once we went ahead and suddenly, the pace of our moves just went up two gears which is the type of pace we need to maintain more consistently throughout the season. If we play with that sort of conviction and belief then many teams will struggle to cope with us. I was admittedly one of the sceptics a few weeks back after not signing another striker but after seeing Son's confident finishing in front of goal in recent days and N'Jie's movement and pace when he came on, I feel much happier that we have enough to really progress. Remember... we have the youngest average aged team in the PL so if this group can progress further over the course of the next 2-3 years and be given time to develop, we could be in for some really exciting times to coincide with a brand new 60,000+ seater stadium. I think our patience will be rewarded if we just stay with the team and get behind them. COYS!!!
You can add Alderweireld to the reason of why Saints dislike Spurs. They thought he was nailed on to join them and we took him from under their noses.
The 2nd goal of the game was massive. First half hour of the game Spurs were constantly giving the ball away cheaply and seemed to be playing with a lack of confidence but once Dier really grew into the game and got City on the back foot there was only one team in it. Really poor last hour for us,echoes of some of our horrendous displays from last season but it really boiled down to one team really wanted it more and that was Tottenham On the pendolino back from Euston,I'll be glad to get home after such a ****ty day
I believe Ian Walker gave their fans the **** hand gesture in the days when Saints played at the Dell.
Dier's interview in yesterday's Standard is certainly worth reading: http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/foo...t-frightened-of-manchester-city-a2955412.html The thing with the two offside goals is the teams' very different reactions to them: City scored an offside goal and we just got on with it, yet with our offside goal we saw City's players up in arms at the decision, with Demichelis getting booked for dissent as the players were leaving the pitch for half time - and it seems to have rattled them, judging by the way they lost all momentum for the second half. The needle was there even before the Alderweireld saga.
I don't recall any of them appealing in live play. It seemed as if it was only when the goal was replayed on the screens that their players started protesting.
https://streamable.com/t3rc Sagna, Sterling and Fernando can all be seen appealing for offside when Walker sends in the initial cross - Sagna seems to be appealing after Caballero makes the save, too. What stands out for me more than anything is what Kolorov's doing: he stops tracking back as the ball goes in, and when Caballero saves he just throws his arms in the air and dawdles on the edge of the area. Also, what was De Bruyne trying to do with the rebound there? Did he overhit a pass to Fernandinho or underhit a pass to Toure? Neither of them seem to know either. ...how does Alan Shearer make this punditry lark look difficult?
I was at an all-day conference so missed the whole game. Couldn't even look at updates on my phone because I was giving a presentation to 250 people! Anyone got a link for the full game? So pleased for Harry and our much misunderstood Argentinian. Sounds like both did really well. I sincerely think UEFA's young Team of the Year will be Paul Pogba and 9 Spurs players.
"Couldn't even look at updates on my phone because I was giving a presentation to 250 people!" Only 250 people at the Pochettino Outktoberfest ?? Even at 0-1 ??
Very good performance in the second half. Glad to see Spurs get out of second gear and play on the front foot for a change. Credit to Pochettino if he saw the opportunity to take City on. They were missing four of their Famous Five today and their replacements, especially in defence, are proving not to be of the same calibre. It could be an interesting season for us all.
I thought it was a great save before that goal as well. You've won a couple of titles and played some excellent football to do it. The downside has been when things get tough, you can look like uninterested millionaires. The manager has to have the balance right and I can't imagine it's easy with players who have all the money and many of the titles they've dreamed of. Silva, Kompany and Hart coming back should help a lot.
