As I have long said, both easy money and in earlier (not so cash-rich) PL days a great means of ensuring the "Sky four" remained so for so long.
No wonder the CL is seemingly so much more 'important' to reach for clubs than actually winning trophies these days. If we're getting circa EUR 22m plus Wembley dough just for being in the group stages, that's astonishing. In comparison, winning the FA Cup roughly nets you around £4m overall if you're a Prem side entering later in the rounds. Winning the League Cup gets you £100,000, yeah you read that correctly, one hundred grand - basically Harry Kane's new weekly wage. Is it any wonder why most sides field youth teams in that? While winning Europa can roughly get you EUR 24m-25m if you're from England/ Spain/ Germany/ Italy. **Maths was never my strong point so correct me if I'm wrong on certain figures.
With the latest avalanche of cash into the PL (the Deloittes "money league" showing that clubs like the Spanners are worth more than most Euro clubs - some of whom have far greater recent prestige/success) , the argument is now whether PL clubs need the CL for financial gain. That certainly seems to be the fear that UEFA have of late.
Well just back from one game and on my way out to the next. First time I am taking in two live Spurs games in a day-oh what joy!
On EL there were posts on our board which had links to a site showing we got 37m Euros for reaching the final though i seem to remember it was weighted more towards the group stages. On the EL another consideration is competing in it helps a clubs coefficient so helping in future CL campaigns by raising the clubs CL seeding.
Which will mean the CL money is likely to get even bigger. I hope people don't make the mistake of thinking that prioritisation of the CL over trophies and glory is just a money issue. The point is that the only way we can have trophies and glory in the medium term is to fight our way into the CL qualifying four. That means more money for us and less for some other club which means we can build a better team and they will have a worse one and trophies and glory will follow.
Why not give Vorm a run out?? I'm all for putting out a strong team, but we also need to rotate occasionally.
I'm all for going out with a bang and not a whimper - until Tosic decides to do his former Mancunian paymasters a favour by clattering Rose six or seven times...
And the Robert Soldado "Awwwwww..." Award goes to... http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/new...-spurs-ahead-of-cska-champions-league-071216/ Ankle injury
What a bizarre team selection. There has been absolutely no consistency in that department since the first game of the tournament against Monaco. I don't think Poch has ever had a clear contingency plan for Europe this season - it feels all 'make it up as you go along'.
Wow, what is pochi doing. He cant be bothered to go full strength when you have a chance of qualifying even when its a crunch match in France. Now this is a pointless match for europe qualification which we know he doesn't care much for and you have a big match at the weekend against United he decides to put out a full strength squad? Wtf is he playing at.
Porto take the lead against Leicester, who've already qualified. Not sure how strong their team is. Alli should bury that one. Poor miss, really.
