I was mulling this over last night and it probably sounds almost blasphemous. For the past 3 seasons we've got so near yet so far. And there is a mantra of 'don't worry, it's a young squad with a young manager, keep the core together and success will come'. What if that isn't true anymore? I'll grant plenty of slack for the league what with Wembley n all, but there are 3 teams left in the FA Cup and we've beaten all 3 comfortably this season. I'll get pilloried for saying this but if we fail to win the Cup I will struggle to continue to believe that 'success will come'. Maybe a new core is needed. Oh the musings of a Spurs fan...
An FA Cup win + PL top 3 will be the acid tests of whether the manager + current squad can get there. To do the former Spurs must beat the current PL #2 and (probably) last seasons finalist / current PL #5. To do the latter means overhauling the Poool while keeping Chelsky at arms length. Players are needed who can also lead on the pitch as well as being competent players. This is a big gap IMHO. I hoped Toby would be the one, but he has never shown that trait. I thought Dier might grow into that role, but again I am not seeing those traits in his play. Similarly for Pochettino. Would Fergie allow the result of yesterday at this point in the season ?? I have my suspicions that he does not have the steel to cajole/punish the squad over on-pitch performances (a different story to disciplinary issues or disrespecting the club) . What fear do the squad have over too many such performances ??
just realised that this season we drew with Watford and West Brom, beat toon and lost to Leicester...a repeat of those scores leaves us in deep deep ****.
Both of them were in their first game back after injury, so that's hardly the best game to cite the viability of that pairing.
We are badly in need of some iron. Who is available? With all these foreign players in the PL,there must be some British talent in the lower leagues that might fit in?
They played in the Newport replay in the round before. In both Rochdale games, a poor Winks was subbed off in the second half. There's no forward drive from either player, they'd be alright if looking to maintain a lead and keep hold of possession but as a starting pairing, I wouldn't like to see it anymore.
In all seriousness...this is way beyond what I thought possible this season ...playing all our games away from home but being 4th is great imo
I think we need top 4 minimum and a trophy this season or we need to stop talking like we are a top outfit. It matters now..the next 5 games are everything to this season being a success. They must have the fire in their bellies to make it happen. We need to stop losing before a ball has been kicked.
We lose at the weekend, went to Brighton, changed 4 players with the SF in mind, played like **** and were lucky to get a point. Utd (who we have largely ridiculed all season) lose at the weekend, change 6 players and win at Bournemouth in a very professional performance. We win on Saturday or at least play to expectations and all will be forgiven. Otherwise there should be some serious questions asked....
Don't worry I will ask a few if we go out. At the end of the day, we haven't been closer to the top teams as we are now and have been in recent seasons. So what's the problem? Why can we still get away with excuses? We have outplayed United at Wembley already. Unless the wages are playing on Saturday we have no excuses for not turning up.
We would have to capitulate now to not get in the top four. Yes the last two results have been poor but we will be in the champions league next season. However winning the FA cup is an absolute must, 27 years since we last won it is embarrassing. We have the Wembley advantage and the best team in the land Man City arent in it . Its about time we get the results in big games when it really matters - starting on Saturday. United are a decent side but no more than that. No more excuses.
Apologies. I thought your process worked for our games only. Without ANY doubt Chelsea will win all 5 games.
There is an obvious comparison with this: the Germany squad. Their squad for the 2006 World Cup was lauded as the nucleus for a successful squad for years to come, yet only Lahm, Klose and Podolski were actually playing for the German side when they won the 2014 World Cup, and in the interim a whole bunch of players had come and gone between the 2010 World Cup and 2008 and 2012 Euros.
The same could be applied to contributors to this forum! I’m looking forward to the Final. And to CL football at the new stadium later this year.
