Never used to be. Martin Chivers, John Duncan, Clive Allen, all came from outside and scored but not now.
yes indeed. You could have included Klinsmann and the great Jimmy Greaves. Agree it is a recent phenomenon.
There may now be grounds to say that the systems that the likes of AVB and Pochettino play(ed) , does not work for anyone other than the very best of strikers. You go back to the Arry and BMJ days, and even though none of Defoe / Crouchy / Pav or Berbatoss / Keane ever got the 20+ PL individual goals per season we desired, they were collectively at least scoring goals. Soldado and Janssen it did not work out for. If similar happens to Lloriente, who by contrast has played in for a PL team and scored well, then IMHO we have a serious problem.
Llorente has made one sub appearance and one start? I'm as critical as they come but even for me it's too soon to write him off
Total rubbish and a waste of time really. Oh well, we're still in it, I guess. Barnsley were really good though, to be fair to them. They were solid at the back(mostly) and did more attacking than Swansea.
Lloriente has missed one chance and people are writing him off. Give the bloke a chance for feck sake. I've never got a woman pregnant the first time I slept with her but it doesn't mean that I'm a Jaffa!
It's a whole heap too early to be doubting Llorente or how he'll fit into our patterns and how many goals he can score. Again, last night, Trippier continually opted not to cross the ball first time. That's the best of him and when he's really effective. It was the same thing on Saturday. Is he under instruction not to? Is he lacking confidence? I don't know but hitting the first defender or crossing into a defence that has set itself is no damn use at all. He won't outpace many fullbacks, so his early delivery is paramount. KWP was always 10-15m deeper than Ben Davies or Danny Rose would have been in the same game. Is he hedging his bets because we only had a back 4 or because he's still not confident to go 'all out' as an attacking force? Also, he had to cut back onto his right foot all the time therebt delaying things again. Again, it's not Llorente's fault. He and Harry Kane on Saturday were coming too deep to get the ball. Llorente has zero pace. His game is all about being central and close to the goal. Get the ball to him there and he'll be fine, especially when he's up to full fitness. He missed pre-season due to a broken arm and must be allowed to do that and show us his best.
I think (I hope) that the Llorente concerns are tongue in cheek. I am certainly no less please he joined despite not burying 1 good chance.
......and just to think back.......I once watched 3 games in one day!......but I'm feeling much better now!
Chivers was the half-time guest for this game. He spoke about a form and scoring drought following an injury, funnily enough. Broke it with a brace against Stoke, who had Gordon Banks between the sticks. He also talked about the unfailing support of the White Hart Lane faithful driving him on.
They didn't. It was only a tenner for adults and a fiver for kids, though. Probably would've been promoted better if the way the fixture was scheduled wasn't such a mess.
I am saying that if the worst does happen, the fault may be with the system and not Lloriente (and therefore his predecessors) .
Llorente and Kane are different types of players so you would assume the other players would play slightly different depending who is up top. Like said previously, with Llorente it makes sense to get more crosses in etc.
I think that a lot of people, myself included, probably got a little too focused on what yesterday's game wasn't, rather than what it was. We didn't play particularly well and scraped a result against a lower league team, so that's fairly justified. On the other hand, we largely did what we set out to do. Pochettino selected a side that had enough quality to progress, but without risking too many key personnel. He picked a lot of players in need of game time and quite a number of them are also recovering from injuries, too. That could be very useful moving forward in the various competitions we're involved in. We won another game at Wembley, progressed in the cup, kept a clean sheet and gave out a couple of debut starts. Winks, N'Koudou, Llorente and Son have all taken important steps in recovering from injuries. Foyth looked very comfortable in his first game, as did Walker-Peters in his first at left-back and second overall. We're in the draw for the next round and another chance for these players to improve, while keeping one eye on a possible trophy. I think that eight Premier League sides have already gone out, so we should be fairly pleased with that, in my opinion.
On this note from another thread, I thought that Trippier made some very decent deliveries from corners in this game. Llorente should've buried his, for a start. Should he be taking them whenever he's picked now, as Eriksen's are really not up to scratch at the moment, for me?
The most important things about the match had to be getting Foyth blooded, as he may well get a start against APOEL due to Verts' suspension, and getting Winks some much-needed minutes for reasons procrastinated about a few posts ago. The competition's still a waste of time and effort though.
Short highlights: Strangely omitted Barnsley's best chances, which came about 15 seconds into the 2nd half. Ugbo lifted the ball over Vertonghen's head and had a good chance to score, but struck it straight at Vorm.
