I'd like to think Spurs can maintain their excellent form against Aston Villa, but I'm not exactly filled with confidence at the moment... please log in to view this image Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Match Records 1896-2015
Another birthday coming up next Thursday...takes me back to first game I can remember as a kid. Long time ago now...and Danny was playing for Villa. In those days Villa was a push over for Spurs. 2 points in the bag for a very long time....even with the aging Push and Run boys! I do hope we return to the "good old days".......because I'm getting a little worried by our league position!
Let's just hope that Villa maintain their no scoring sequence because if we concede, well, that will be bad news.
Just watched that - it was really interesting. - Who the hell was Princess Alexandra? - There's a coming-together in the box at about 4:40. Nailed-on scream and fall and much talk of "there was contact" and a definite penalty nowadays. Not even mentioned by the commentators or players back then. - Ref looks like an overweight, retired teacher. Probably was an overweight retired teacher. - So Alan Gilzean really never did look young? He's 32 in that game - looks to be in his 50s. - Goalies. Lack of gloves. And it's incredible that the ability to pick up back-passes combined with that 7(?)-steps rule (and not a time limit) did not lead to absurd and regular time-wasting. I guess referees just came down on obvious time-wasting so the rules couldn't be exploited like you'd think they would be. - I thought Steve Perryman was always a right back. Turns out that was only at the end of his career. - And this is the least obvious reflection (cos players not cheating as much and the ref being fat and old are pretty predictable): The editing of those highlights was ridiculously good. They must have taken a lot more effort in those days to create the illusion of continuous action cos I did not realise there had been an edit when the commentator said it'd hit the half-hour mark. I kept trying to spot edits in the second half and couldn't see them - they go from a goalkick at one point in the game to a goalkick later on in the game, I assume. Kinda interesting that maintaining that illusion was obviously more valued then than now in this post-modern world. Perhaps the game was more direct then and if quite a lot of the game involved goalies booting the ball out of their hands then editing to create the illusion of seamless action would be easier. - And that kit is dodgy. Not liking the yellow socks.
Sorry - as I re-read that statement about the kit being dodgy I just immediately imagine hundreds of kits from the late 80s and 90s. No - that kit is not dodgy. That kit is perfectly fine - I just didn't like the yellow socks.
Princess Alexandria daughter of the Duke of Kent. I was at this match and, although Villa were 3rd Division,it wasn't easy.Far from it.Chivers was,at that moment, the best center forward in Britain. My memories were of Chivers goals and the young Villa girl fans crying as they left the ground.
So, win tomorrow we are 7/8th, lose and we could be 16th after the Monday game. Pressure will definitely build if we are flirting with relegation.
SD, I said Poch would be under pressure if we lost the Newcastle match which as you know we did. He's also started to make excuses about the pitch which have not been made before so he's feeling the pressure already. A couple of wins will put it right as Newcastle have shown.
Thanks for putting that up PNP brought back a few memories. Note the simple commentary concentrating on the game and not the fouls. Note the lack of 'cheating' and the simple direct football. When you get the ball the idea is to get it into the opposition penalty area as quick as possible. Note how few sideways and backward passes there were. Most of all note the lack of hype the game speaks for itself.
Is our pitch smaller than Southampton's then.I've never heard a Spurs manager complain that the White Hart Lane pitch was small.......
It's a pathetic excuse. I bet Daniel Levy cringed when he heard Poch come out with that crap. But yes, our pitch is smaller than Southampton's. Ours is 100 x 67 and Southampton's is 105 x 68.
It actually is slightly smaller than Southamptons and is one of the smaller playing areas in the Premier League. White Hart Lane's pitch dimensions are 110 by 73 yds, whereas St Mary's is 112 by 74. City have the largest (115x74) and the Spam have the smallest (110x70). Not sure about some of the newer sides, though. SC's measurements are in meters, for those wondering about the difference. I agree that it's a poor excuse.
All the many pitches at the training ground, are exactly the same size as the WHL pitch, so MP's excuses don't impress me. If he feels there is a false feeling, lack of stadium effect, feel about training in Enfield, then he should switch the training to WHL.
So, if Villa lose tomorrow does lambert skedaddle and if Spurs lose what happens to Poch? NewsNow state both managers are under pressure.
I'm always cautious after a defeat yido. I know we beat Brighton in a cup competition but that doesn't count for the PL. Beating a Championship side in a cup is always difficult but I felt that we should have won by more than two so it's caution from me tomorrow. Even if we win there's still a hell of a lot to do to stay confident.
I'm just worried the generous Tottenham bus will roll up tomorrow, 5 defeats on the trot for Villa I think, we love to help teams out when they're in a mess!
