Tottenham Hotspur v Asteras Tripolis Match Thread

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by PleaseNotPoll, Oct 22, 2014.

  1. Was glad to see that Poch was pissed off at the end of the game. Despite the win, there were far too many mistakes at the back for us, which gave the lie as to why we struggle in the Prem. He's clearly not happy that the team isn't taking in what ever it is he's doing in training.

I agree. Probably doesn't help that we're constantly chopping and changing at the back and there are probably one or two language problems for Fazio, too.

Words from Kane after the match

"It was a great night... until I went in goal! I wasn't the best - I'll leave that to the keepers from now on. I quite fancied myself in goal, but when I saw the free-kick wobbling towards me I wasn't too happy!

"We want to kill off teams, and so five goals is great. I like sniffing in and around the box, seeking rebounds. Goals in and around the box are crucial.

"I have seen Erik Lamela do that in training - he has that in his locker. It's great for him to do them in the big games. I need to keep doing what I'm doing, and when I get a chance score goals.

"The manager tells me to go out there, play my football and get my goals. I have done that tonight."

The stuff about going in goal made me laugh. Great to hear Lamela's doing that in training too so it's not a complete fluke. A couple more of them on Sunday and we'll all be very happy.

just back from the match with my daughter... what an outstanding goal from Lamela and a great hat trick from Kane.

fitting way to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Bill Nicks passing.

Yes, outstanding our players wowed everyone on this day.

I think that's about the third most outrageous goal I've ever seen (after two from Roberto Carlos). A rabona is one thing, but a rabona from fifteen yards away powering into the top corner?

You can watch football a long time and not see a player knock four in the way Kane did: two with his right foot, one with his head, and one with both keeper's gloves.

And Lloris may have had as good a save as I've seen this year.

Was it obvious what he did at the stadium? Have to say lots didn't notice it watching on television (Jenas I'm looking at you now).

No it wasn't obvious, I thought it was his second goal that they were raving about on the radio on the way home. Even on the big screen replays you couldn't really see it. I almost had the name KANE printed on the back of a Keepers jersey after the match, the 1882's were singing 'Harry Kane, England, England's No. 1'.

I have to agree with what someone said earlier that despite the goal scorers, Capoue was MoM but Dembele and Ade certainly put in a shift.

What an outrageous goal from Lamela. Is he that one footed though that he'd rather do that than try the simpler curl with the right foot??

Lamela's scored one before, though not with the same flair:

It was a bit showboaty, to be honest. The sort of goal, that when it comes off, everybody cries fantastic! But, if you miss, or make a cock of it, you get a bollocking from the manager instead.

But as for only having one foot, so has Messi....

Not having a go, just from the position he was in, it seemed a weird choice of shot. I remember Ronaldinho scoring that weird toe poke shot v us a few years back. But there he really didn't have much in the way of other options to get a shot off.

The best bit about Lamela's for me is that the action lends itself to chipping the ball, which is why it's most commonly used for crosses and chipped passes but Lamela's strike was something totally different. It's a lovely strike in normal circumstances but add in the rabona and it's something special but on top of that it wasn't even a normal rabona as his standing leg was much further away from the ball which allowed him to get power and swerve on it as opposed to a lot of backspin which you normally see.

Wasn't obvious from behind the goal(with 1882) especially as a defender was in the way. I did notice that he used his left foot when it called for a right and did think wow!

I was trying to figure out how he got so much power into it. It looks like he really spun his body counterclockwise, so it wasn't just the left foot going towards the ball, but the body revolving the left foot. I agree, it would have been an excellent goal if he'd hit it right footed.

My first thought was that it was outrageous showboating that just happened to come off. But the more I looked at it, the more it seemed like pure instinct from Lamela. He honestly thought that was the thing to do in that situation. Whatever it was, it certainly worked. The keeper didn't move.

No doubt he gives the ball away too often, both through errant passes and by dribbling when he should pass--though his direct dribbling has done us a lot of good as well. The obvious thought is to get him in shooting positions more often, because he can hit some absolute stunners. He might just make a great striker. Still, 2 goals and six assists in all comps this year is nothing to sneeze at, considering he's only played about 10 games.

I had the perfect view of Lamela's goal last night, was truly unbelievable. Goal of the season already. His second weren't bad either! Needs to work on his execution for passes though as he does seem to misplace too many, his idea and vision is fantastic, just let down by the actual action.

Thought Kane was brilliant (bar his moment in goal <laugh>), if he's dropped for the Newcastle game it'll be a travesty. He's the only striker who's playing well and actually scoring. After conceding the goal (which was hilarious, I've never seen Park Lane laugh their arses off at conceding a goal), he truly appreciated the "Harry Kane, he's one of our own" chant, he applauded and gratefully acknowledged it.

Really enjoyable night overall, the crowd was pretty atmospheric despite a dreadful showing - the emptiest I've ever seen WHL in the 9/10 years I've been going - the football was good, we saw one of the best ever goals at WHL and there was also time for a bit of laughter.

I'm sure it done Bill proud.

Lamela's decision making is a little off at the moment. He often either tries to do too much or he freezes and gives defenders a second to recover.
Both he and Dembele have the same dribbling issue too, where they easily beat the first man and often the second, then fail to do the easy bit afterwards.
The Argentinian will generally try to carry on beating people until he loses the ball, whereas the Belgian will mainly cut back, either going past the same man again or choosing not to shoot.
The former's too positive, while the latter isn't positive enough.

A couple of Dembele's runs stick in the mind, for me.
The first resulted in him being surrounded by four Asteras players, who still couldn't get the ball off him. He made a decent pass in the end, but it was back and to the side.
The second was when he drifted past another defender and had a great chance to shoot, but wanted it on his left, so he cut back and wasted the chance.
I get the feeling that his confidence has taken a beating, but there's a real player in there somewhere, if the Villas-Boas fixation on possession at all costs can be worked out of him.
Strong, quick, incredible ball control, an eye for a pass and a good shot, but he's not using what he's got right now, playing the percentage game too often.

There was talk on here a while ago about one of the downsides of our summer's transfer dealings being that many of the players who the fans feel a connection to and admire - the likes of Dawson and Holtby for example - are no longer with us (or the likes of Lennon, who are no longer featuring in the team with any regularity) and that perhaps there seems to be a lack of character in the team, especially character that the fans can relate to. Well Harry Kane looks to be well on the way to becoming one of those players that us fans can look to: he always gives his all, he actually has a personality, he's a North Londoner so he has that local connection too, and he's turning into a half decent player in the midst of all this. Does anyone else think it was significant that it was Kane that was handed the armband last night, not Vertonghen or Lennon who have both captained us before?

I agree with you PNP on Dembele, it has always seemed to have been a mentality rather than ability issue with him that has limited his effectiveness. And Lamela's decision making can be suspect too at times, and we have to hope that it can be coached out of him in a way that Lennon's poor decision making never truly has been.
