Make that five Marsh was playing RB last season for Orient, so that's one of the less random decisions for the back line
Orient make 11 changes. Straightforward enough, I guess. Lawrence Vigouroux goes in goal for them. He's another one of our ex-academy players. Chilean U20 keeper, at one point.
Very unlucky for Etete. Good pass by Pochettino and he does well to turn his man, but hits the post and Vigouroux nearly spills the rebound into his net.
6-2. Another ball over the top and Johnson finishes well. I know this is a weakened side, but this is very, very poor.
Even if we accept a bunch of our U23s haven't trained much since March, that's no excuse for them apparently failing to understand that they have two feet
Result didn’t flatter Orient I’m afraid. We were really poor, wasn’t just via a lack of fitness either, no one seemed to be working in a team, didn’t seem to be any clear tactic, basically looked like a kick about in the park and that’s on the manager. Certainly didn’t help playing one of our best attacking prospects at LB either.
That was a major issue with our U23s a couple of seasons back: with Edwards and Shashoua both loaned out, rather than change the formation to compensate for there being no wingers available (as Markanday and Bennett were getting started in the U18s) instead he'd just stick Oakley Booth or whoever on the wing The thing with tonight was that, even though some players weren't available (Parrott and Eyoma on loan, White and Cirkin with the first team, and Bowden likely being left out as he has a loan lined up) that defence made no sense, both in terms of players who weren't on the pitch (***an Walcott) or baffling choices (Markanday at LB, Lyons Foster at CB)
Nice touch by the club and Marsh after the game. Hopefully we can do this every year with Orient and possibly even take a first team/ mixed squad next time as that should help boost tickets sales (presuming it’s all good in a year) to help more for the JE3 Foundation.
I was scrolling through comments on Twitter and it looks like Orient’s trialist was none other than Shaq Coulthirst. So make that two former academy players that scored against us... Spursy
