Probably the first NLD, as he put in one hell of a shift that day and for a decent chunk of that match was playing like Sandro
Ha-bloody-ha!! Nah - I'm thinking of a PL game this year. He was at the heart of everything, winning the ball back, dribbling, astute passing - and got fouled a dozen times. Avoiding the obvious goalscoring feats and Kanes general level of performance, I thought Lucas epitomised that day what we had been sadly lacking. I'd have liked to come up with a top performance from Dier or Doherty, but they would have all been for the opposition!
I'm thinking of starting a Room 101 for this season. Everyone should nominate one for each category Worst player Worst signing Worst loan Worst team performance Worst individual performance Worst individual error Worst refereeing performance Worst VAR quote-unquote decision Worst interpretation of what constitutes as a handball that particular week Worst punditry or commentary performance Worst example of a player being thrown under the bus The "winners" get consigned to Orwelian oblivion so they are never spoken of until they're sold, loaned...or start a game next season
Worst player - Doherty. Worst signing - Doherty. Worst performance - Zagreb... Utterly disgraceful. Worst individual error - Jose for bringing on Winks against Everton in the FA Cup, Winks then proceeded to drop the worst cameo I’ve seen in yonks. Worst refereeing performance/ Worst VAR brainfart - I combined these two as I’m someone that tends to not focus too much on ref performances but the VAR call against Leeds the other week was embarrassing. Worst punditry or commentary performance - basically anyone that isn’t Chris Coleman, I really enjoy listening to his commentary. Worst example of a player being thrown under the bus - I’d probably say Kane. He gets **** for failure to turn up in finals and whilst he himself does need to take blame for going into some 50% fit, the lack of effort from the team in big games and the lack of chances he gets is a joke yet he seemingly gets singled out for it. It’s a little similar to those who used to say Eriksen never turned up. The whole team seems to flop in big games and yet we tend to blame the one or two best players at the club as if they’re meant to defend goals, control the midfield, create chances and score them too.
Worst player - Dier/Sanchez Worst signing - Doherty. Worst performance - Zagreb and the last 10 minutes v West ham Worst individual error - Levy and the Board for not seeing that Jose needed sack in February and then sacking him 6 days before a cup final... and not having a manager in place for 5 weeks and counting...oh and the ESL fiasco...oh ... and charging £60 for the final match...and for treating fans so poorly Worst refereeing performance Spurs related...that ref that allowed the Brighton equaliser at our place AFTER seeing the replay. Generally, the ref who sent off the West Ham player a couple of weeks ago. But the inconsistencies of refs always does my head in no matter who is playing. Worst handball that moronic penalty for Newcastle. Worst VAR decision All the lined offsides. They pretend to be scientific and accurate when are not because of the : 1. Frames per second speed of TV pictures means there is a split second built in inaccuracy 2. There are not cameras running the length of the pitch so the placing of lines is an educated guess...when the offside are decided by mm then no kind of guesses are OK. Worst punditry or commentary performance Carraghers weird arsed noise in the City v Liverpool game Worst example of a player being thrown under the bus Bale, was not in favour of signing him but JM was out of line.
How anyone other than Gedson Fernandes is being listed as worst player is beyond me, I can only assume everyone forgot he existed. As I had done before these lists began.
To be fair, he's not the only Benfica loanee that people have forgotten have existed this season To the point where Benfica are reportedly adding clauses into all future loans of a minimum number of games or they get recalled
He played twice and we won both matches, one of which was a win against Chelsea. Other players have had many more opportunities and played consistently worse than he did. Can't play badly if you don't play.
I really don't get the hate shown to Gedson. He was a panic buy who we only signed due to the plague of injuries in our midfield. Then once lockdown took care of said injuries he became surplus to requirements. He gets a huge amount of stick for the awful penalty miss against Norwich, but I was at that game and tbh aside from Lo Celso and Skipp he was the only player who looked remotely interested in receiving the ball that night.
Had to change my signing of the season from Hojbjerg to Bale. Didn’t play anywhere near what he should’ve done but 11 goals in 20 league games and 14 in 33 overall is seriously impressive. 95% of players would cream themselves over stats like that. Makes you realise just how good the guy is (and especially was) that even with limited minutes he’s still banging out those numbers. More league goals than Aubameyang this season too . Please stay with us, Gareth!
Impressive stats from Bale but he's definitely not suited to games where the oppos are targeting the right flank. Leicester hardly used their left side which gave bale a bit more freedom. I recall too many games where our RBs were floundering because Bale wasn't helping them. He's a luxury squad player.
Against Leeds and West Ham he's been a waste of a starting space Against Sheff Utd and Leicester he's been a difference maker The problem is that, for so much of this season, we simply haven't created the space on the pitch that allows the second to be a regular occurrence and instead have allowed our weaknesses to become easy targets If we played on the front foot more and created space, there would have been maybe an additional 10-15 minutes in games that would have allowed Bale and a few others (Ndombele, Lucas and Bergwijn all spring to mind) to make a difference
