I heard they used to amputate them to avoid them being out injured due to strained calf muscles.

It wasn't amputation as we know it, part of the captain's remit was to bite off the lower legs of players who either showed signs of calf strains or complained of tightness in the calf.
As Jim Iley was the captain and not flexible enough to reach his own lower leg to perform such surgery, they got a bloke out of the crowd with a full head of hair who was a big fan of Iley to do it for him.
