It doesn't matter if he has a release clause or not. As a future manager he will need to preach team spirit and belief in a shared cause to be successful. Anyone who sees how he has behaved in regard to his current team will quite rightly think he is a hypocrite when he does so. To wait another 4 months will surely not wreck his prospects as a coach but his behaviour in respect of QPR just might.

If you had a clause in your current working contract saying you were free to leave if you were offerred let's say, a better job, would you then turn this down to stay with your current employer even though the other opportunity meant more money, more long term stability and more security for your family?

Not sure why it should be any different for footballers.

I disagree and think it does matter if he has a release clause. If you have a clause in your contract, you're perfectly entitled to activate it.

We wouldn't be disagreeing if Ba had come to us due to a clause in his contract and not Chelsea!

It's not any different for footballers. If you were, say, the main architect of a building renovation project and decided to leave the project at a critical phase because you had a better offer then other employers would think long and hard about your credibility for future projects. In any profession, talent is only useful if it comes with dependability.

But if I had a clause stipulating this could be the case right from the get go, I don't think it would affect my credibility at all as my employers were always aware it could happen, but were happy to emlpoy me regardless.

What I'm saying is the clause issue is an important one, but you didn't seem to think it was.

The plot thickens. Toronto want him before March, we may not let him go until after that!

    BREAKING FOOTBALL NEWS
Toronto FC will confirm QPR defender Ryan Nelsen as their new manager on Tuesday, but it is not yet clear when he will be allowed to take up his new role.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise want the 35-year-old to take charge in time for the start of their new season in March. However, QPR may yet insist he stays with the Premier League club until the end of the English season.

Much may depend on QPR manager Harry Redknapp's success in the January transfer window as he seeks to strengthen his leaky defence. Further talks between the parties are expected in the coming days.

    (BBC)

    Interesting. Maybe no clause exists.

Except Nelsen isn't a main architect at QPR. It would be the same as, say, a senior builder on that renovation project who had a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave and take a main architect job elsewhere. I don't think this would affect how people view his dependability much at all.

Not really the case, IMO. Players and managers are forever leaving clubs for new jobs, whether of their own accord or otherwise. Can hardly see this effecting Nelsen's credibility in the football employment market in the long-term. He'll be judged by his managerial career from now on.

QPR's Ryan Nelsen has been appointed the head coach at the Major League Soccer club Toronto FC but the defender has yet to make arrangements to leave the west London team and is available for this weekend's game against Tottenham.

The 35-year-old New Zealander has been one of the few players to shine for the Hoops this season, having joined in June following spells at Blackburn and Spurs. Nelsen has made 21 appearances in all competitions but has now requested talks with the manager Harry Redknapp to work out when he can join his new club.

Nelsen says he owes a debt of gratitude to Redknapp, the chairman Tony Fernandes and the club, so he does not want to cause unnecessary disruption. "I am under contract at QPR," he told a press conference in Canada, where he arrived for talks having been given time off training by the manager. "Harry Redknapp and Tony Fernandes, the owner of QPR, are fantastic people. They are such nice people.

"I've got some obligations at QPR that we have just got to go through. It has been a bit of whirlwind so there are some details we have to go through."

Nelsen's playing contract at Loftus Road runs until 30 June, but the defender says his body is struggling to cope with the demands of top-flight football. "I've had several conversations with Harry and Tony Fernandes," the New Zealander added. "They have been so understanding with my situation. They understand that when I play I am playing on glass knees and glass ankles. It is a bit of a struggle.

"They know I am at the end but they also know the predicament they are in. It is a major predicament. Getting out the English Premier League has major financial implications and there is a lot of pressure from fans, the media and so on, so I have an obligation.

"I really want QPR to stay up and to kick on for Harry and because of the owner. They are just fantastic people. They would like me to keep playing but we have to sit down and talk. If we can get five straight wins, that'd be perfect.

"I think then we can shake hands [and part company] but we are just going to have to talk and see how things progress."

Toronto's new season begins on 9 March with a visit from Sporting Kansas City but Nelsen is clear that there will be no playing role for him in MLS, having made his name there during a four-year spell with DC United – another club he was recently linked to.

The move to Canada will see him link up once again with the club's president and general manager Kevin Payne, who was an executive at DC United, when Nelsen played there. "From the day Ryan arrived in DC as a 23-year-old player I always knew he would be a head coach someday," Payne said. "I believe his leadership qualities, intelligence, preparation and character will contribute to his success as a coach. I couldn't ask for a better person to lead our club."

Toronto finished bottom of the 10-team Eastern Conference last season with five wins and eight draws from 34 games.

I didn't have it in for Mariner and am disppointed to see him leave Toronto. I am equally disappointed to see Nelsen leave QPR. But he is talking about disappearing after 5 straight wins!

If we ever managed to get 5 straight wines, I'd carry him to Canada myself
