The mines (75% I believe) were making huge losses and the country could not afford to subsidise them any longer. I also suspect had the unions not been so greedy, there may have been a different outcome. I agree it was a sad thing to do however it would have happened eventually anyway. Underground mining is far more costly than open pit!

Both sides of the political spectrum have valid arguments as to why they should be supported. In our life times... All of our life times... Neither party has run the country especially well. It's really sad to see people bashed for their political leanings. Neither party is better than the other except for on an individual by individual basis.
