in 2001 zidane moved to real for 46.6 million pounds... lets just say he would certinly be a 100million pound player today. maybe more

so if rio was 30 mil then 70 mil would probably be accurate today.

the record for a defender i think is david luiz ar 50mil or whatever... in short the next highest fee ever paid for a defender is.... yes you've guessed it rio ferdinand in 2002. 30mil..

David luiz fee was obscene. rio was a beeter player hands down than that guy but 12 years and hyper inflation later... rios is still second most expensive defender??

    edit there....

i forgot mangala to cit for 32mil and thiago to psg for 35mil.... those are 2012 and 2014

lillian thruam went for 22mil in 2002. now he was a top top player.. no worse than rio.. that was a serious fee.

Not sure you can make a comparisson like that.

Thats like saying veron and beckham who went for around 30m are also 70m players. You using Zidane as one bench mark isn't quite a correct comparisson. Was Buffon bought for the equivalent of 70m pounds then?

Either way Ferdinand was a key part to all the successes down the line with United and was more than worth it when you benchmark what he has achieved.

    welllllll...

ok lets put it this way. leeds obviously screwed the very last cent out of utd in 2002. remember this sale was the first inkling they were in financial trouble. 3 or 6 months later and the price would have been halved

So leeds buy him and have him on at least a contract for 3 more years......................

    why can't i?

I've taken the world record fee a tthe time and the world record fee for a defender and extrapolated forward..

And yes buffon would be the equivilant of the same 70mil. he stands out as a total anomaly as well. a giant giant fee for a keeper in any era.

again 50 mil for luiz... are you saying rio is worth less???

30m seemed like a lot at the time (it was) but if given the chance again do you think United would buy Ferdinand at that price knowing what he has done and has achieved. I don't think they would bat an eyelid at it or anyone else if they were in united position. Ergo for me that means his transfer even at that price was successful.

Yea maybe they could have waited for a bit and saved themselves a few bucks when Leeds were going under, but even at 30m it has ended being a fantastic deal for what he has achieved.

As you know it's pro London club news:
Tottenham handed £11m transfer kitty boost after unusual sale

Tottenham Hotspur has boosted its transfer kitty to the tune of £11 million after selling one of its more unusual assets, the Evening Standard understands.
The north London Premier League club has sold the site of the Brook House primary school, on High Road Tottenham, to Legal & General Property.
Property agent Lambert Smith Hampton advised Spurs on the deal and Doherty Baines acted for the buyer.
Spurs would not comment on what it would use the proceeds for, but it will probably be a welcome cash boost during the transfer season or aid the development of its £400 million new stadium.
“We are delighted to have brought this scheme to fruition,” a Spurs spokesman said.
L&G bought the asset on behalf of its Limited Price Inflation Income Property Fund.
Let to Lion Education Trust, with a full guarantee from The Secretary of State for Education, the building will house 420 pupils and open in September.
