  9. I listened to a lot of blues. Indeed, I have a fairly comprehensive collection of stuff.

The reason that I was influenced by the later players is primarily because they had already developed those ideas, and taken them to the kinds of places that I was more interested in. No point re-inventing the wheel.

That said, I am always interested in feel and touch, which many of the old players have in spades and buckets. Once you've learned major and minor pentatonic scales, and how to switch between them, with a sprinkling of turn-arounds and endings, there isn't much else you can do with the blues before you begin to sound derivative. That said, I still love to listen to John Lee Hooker stuff. And the odd bit of Buddy Guy.

van Halen admits to having been influenced by Hank Marvin, as does Satriani. In some small measure, therefore, I have the benefit of Marvin's influence when I learn from the later guys, whether I appreciate that fact or not.

You have to go back further to get the real influence, that's all commercial dull stuff imo. Listen to Son House, Charley Patton or Howlin Wolf to get to the real roots of it all. People like Clapton just sound **** in comparison.

  20. Yeah, as I said, I have quite a vast collection of blues material, encompassing all of the people you mention. I didn't bother learning it because it was already encompassed in the material and techniques of the people that I wanted to learn from.

I'm not a blues guitarist by inclination, although I do appreciate that the rock music that I do play is heavily influenced by the early blues guitarists.

Most of my playing uses modal scales, which isn't part of the blues lexicon. I do incorporate pentatonic blues scales, riffs and licks, but it is via people like Satriani, Moore, and Hendrix.
