The commentary for Galileo's win was a joke, he was screaming his name when he took up the running as if the race was a full gone conclusion with 2 furlongs to race, and he was nearly made to look very silly by Fantastic Light who got on terms with him at one point. My personal favourite commentary was the American commentator in Raven's Pass's Classic win, he was calling Curlin the winner on the last bend, Look at Curlin go this is unbelievable he was shouting. How dumb must he have felt when Raven's Pass and Dettori flew past in the home straight
I dont go as far back as Grundy v Bustino but I was there for what I consider the best 2 King George's in all the time I have watched racing which is going back to Nashwan's win in 89. 1) Nashwan - what a great day. anyone who was there will remember the heat as much as the racing! 2) Harbinger - I stood open mouthed as he came down the home straight ripping up my bet on Workforce ashe went past me! 3) Montjeu 4) Galileo 5) Doyen - just because I was there for that one as well!
Joe.....Ofcourse Shergar was "all out" to win the Derby. He pulled 15 lengths clear, and ended up winning by 10 eased up from a horse who went on to win 6 G1s. Dancing Brave was flogged to beat the likes of Shadari, Bering and Triptych. He also lost to Sharastani in the Derby. Sir Micheal Stoute and Walter Swinburn would confirm that Sharastani wouldn't get anywhere near Shergar
Surprised no-one mentioned Teenoso. It was a pretty good field on paper, and he beat them comprehensively. Mercer, who was riding the previous years winner Time Charter, said it was the best KG field he'd ever seen (as he'd ridden in many of those mentioned above that puts it in perspective). Suppose Teenoso didn't catch the imagination as other horses did but he must have been a pretty good 4yo.
Phew, what memories. Many thanks to Nassau and to Ron for the clip on Ribot. (Shergar was a fine racehorse but not the greatest, surely? I would put the 1965 Derby and Arc winner Sea Bird II quite a way ahead of him).
