True that this is very dependent on your generation. My memory only really starts from the early/mid 90's, so the class of Sinclair, Ferdinand, Impey, Barker, McDonald, and co. would make up my list. Bircham cos he loved playing for Rangers so much. Surprised that no one has mentioned a certain Mr Zamora. Might only make it onto the shortlist due to one moment, but boy what a moment!
Best is OK but what about your favourites. Mine are :- Ray Brady, Mark Lazarus, Tony Angel, Don Masson, Gareth Ainsworth, Mike Keen, Brian Bedford, Rufus Brevett, Paul Furlong, Richard Langley, Paul Murray and Jan Stejskal.
As has been said by many, age will have a lot to say with who you select. I refuse to pick anyone that I've not seen, so that rules out Reg Allen (possibly our best ever goalkeeper). I reserve the right to edit my choices when my memory is at it's sharpest & reminds me of who I've forgotten! In no particular order:- Stan Bowles, Rodney Marsh, Gerry Francis, Phil Parkes, Ray Wlikins, Paul Goddard, Frank McClintock, Dave Thomas, Paul Parker, Les Ferdinand No apologies for picking five of the near championship winning side. All twelve of those players are who everybody else should be measured against. That's if you saw then of course! Also Clive Wilson & Don Masson not included. That shows how much I thought of Goddard. The first three I mentioned happen to be football God's & deserve the discription of World Class.
I like this variation Lincoln. Again, i reserve the right to edit & will not include any from my best list:- Ale Faurlin, Gary Waddock, Mick Leach, Frank Clarke, Mike Ferguson, Ian Watson, Glen Roeder, Paul Furlong (have even forgiven him his Enfield connections), Chris Day, Marcus Bignot
It depends how you define best. Alan McDonald was our best servant but no way our best player of all time. Sentimentality I would think. Don't get me wrong I loved the guy and went to the match in NI in honour of him after his death.
Just looking at names no one has mentioned...(generation based)....gary bannister (2 hatricks against u know who).28 goals in one season in avge side. And mr consistancy at LB...ian dawes...(conseq appearences rcd??)
Ron played in one of rangers greatest away victories ever. He partnered Tony Tagg at CB when the R's went up and tonked the reigning champs Derby 5-1 at the Baseball Ground back in 75-76. I remember the headline in the Evenimg Standard that Saturday night QPR BEAT CHAMPS 5-1. That as as good as it got for big Ron as I am fairly sure Dave Webb came back in the next week. I am replacing Ron and Tony Hazell for Stan and Rodney in my all time top 10 what was I thinking
I think we've moved beyond top 10 players, there are far too many....maybe it was stretching things a tad with the 2 Hazells, but they were both good players in different eras. In many ways it makes you think that for all the truly great players we've had they would not have been held in such high esteem if if wasn't for the likes of the other unsung good honest pros who put in the hard yards to make the side tick. Perhaps the next thread should be "Top 10 really average players"....
Best player who never made it was Martyn Busby, he would have been better than Gerry were it not for a broken leg.
