FFS, he's an accountant. Gimme a break with the sentimental tosh. He wouldn't know a Football Manager from a banana.
I see the only mistake fernandes has being a little too loyal to Hughes. But can you blame him? During the reign of briatore we became a laughing stock for sacking a manager every other week, so fernandes tried to rectify this, he knows his limitations and that he isn't a football chairman with experience, it's just unfortunate that he choose Hughes. But the fact we are in this state isn't all down to his appointment if Hughes, it isn't entirely down to Hughes' mistakes, but more to the fact that for the last 5 years we haven't had a team! We've had a manager after manager keep a few, get rid of a few and buy loads. This has meant we've had no backbone of a team with which to build on. Warnock produced a minor footballing miracle when he saved us from relegation one season, then bought in 3 old war horses and one unknown in mackie. But warnock said from the start that they were just to get us up and we would need a new team once we got promoted. Unforrtunately he couldn't have predicted that the goons would try and destroy us by not investing and refusing to sell to mittal. So he had 4 days in which to build a team once fernandes came in, but you can't build a team in days. As a result we've always been struggling and no amount of purchases were going to sort out the problem over night. This is why the likes of Norwich, Swansea and now Southampton are succeeding because they are a team, built over seasons who won promotion on team spirit, and when things have got tough they've been able to fight. The good news is that if we are relegated, fernandes has said today that we will be keeping all players who haven't got a get out clause which I think is everyone bar Remy. Some might say that the players are mercenaries and we should get rid,but I believe that would be wrong as it would create another new and fractured team. Better to keep the team and build some team spirit which is what we've been lacking. Then hopefully all involved from the players to the top will learn from the mistakes we've been making.
OP...officially written by Max Clifford... thanks TF, but get someone in who knows what a football is...please
Sorry it was not bad luck, but as mentioned above at the start of the season we got two sick notes as strikers and didn't deal with our defensive problems from last season. On top of that we have had and continue to have poor individual performances in major games. Cesar against Villa and Samba against Fulham most recently.
At least our Tone demonstrates consistent form - bottom of the barrel with us and F1 team Caterham, but just think about all those advertising & marketing revenues for his "real" businesses.
I like Tony and I'm still confident that we'll have a much better club over the next few years if he stays. However, we are not looking odds on for relegation due to bad luck. Zamora is average at best and he and AJ were always going to get injured. They were not the answer. Loaning out Cisse when we had a dearth of forward choices was a mistake. Not sacking Hughes much earlier was a huge mistake and we can only hope that ALL this season's mistakes will be learnt from.
