Sordell did pretty well I thought...almost scored twice. Ok the opposition was pretty hapless (I suspect they play at a Sunday league level) Some blinding strikes and a professional job all around. The 1st team would have scraped a 2/3-0 or something. Do we get the money for the almost 8k crowd or share with the FA? TBH Some like that Chamberlain and Wickham guy have a lot to learn before becoming top class players but guess the experience will do them good etc.
Hi all, I went to the game, and indeed when Pearce bought on Waghorn and Sordell the team look like it had more urgency, pace and penetration when compared to the taller but more slower Wickham and Delfouneso. Sordell was so unlucky not to score once, when put through one-on-one and with a long range shot, and i agree that he was the best of the forwards. Generally the England U21's were very good against a pretty poor team, controlling possession with Rodwell and Henderson and being patient. Down the right-side we looked very dangerous, with Flanagan and Chamberlain linking up well and having the ability to go past players at will. Decent crowd came, just over 7,000. Odd atmosphere, it was like a friendly. My first experience of any sort of England international, probably my last, there was no tension or bite to the game, and i imagine the same would be for most international games.
Is Wickham really worth all those millions? He may improve but thought in terms of strikers Sordell and Waghorn were in a different class tonight.
I thought it was a good game although like Emiatss said it did seem to lack a bit of passion. My 7 year old and his mate loved it tho and 6 goals is enough to keep them happy, My 5 year old tho was more enthralled by Angry Bird's on the phone! Even Mrs ET enjoyed on a rare trip to the Vic with us .. My thoughts on the game: Henderson, Rodwell & Lansbury all looked really comfortable on the ball and it felt like they could hae opened them up at any time, we saw glimpses of what Oxlade-Chamberlaine may be able to do but it felt a little like watching Walcott as there was no consistency to his play. I thought Delfonso looked powefull but didn't get into the positions to hurt them. As for Connor Wickham I just do not understand all the hype behind this guy, poor control, lacked vision and did not get in front of goal at all. How can he be worth 12 million and DG be worth 3.5? I know he is 6 years younger but you can hardly say DG is old. On this eveidence I would expect to take no more than £20 million for Marvelous Marvin
It was a very enjoyable game. England showed us what we are missing rather at the Vic at the moment--a team that can play good possession football and then score with a touch of class. Lansbury, was outstanding and Henderson and Chamberlain very good. Did we really have both Lansbury and Cleverley in our team a couple of seasons ago? Gosh! Marvin was excellent when he came on--lively and skillful when playing in an advanced role. Much better than Wickham. If Marvin had been on from the start he would have had a hat-trick.You have to hope he gets more chances at this level, and maybe in the Olympics squad. It was very encouraging.
U21's about to kick off. England team v Iceland: 1 Jack Butland, 2 Jon Flanagan, 3 Matthew Briggs, 4 Jack Rodwell. 5 Martin Kelly, 6 Craig Dawson, 7 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 8 Jordan Henderson (c), 9 Marvin Sordell, 10 Henri Lansbury, 11 Nathan Delfouneso... OXlade-Chamberlain has scored for England!! Mav was fouled in the build up and the ref played a great advantage. Iceland 0-1 England
Oxlade-Chamberlain gets a second following an error by the Iceland keeper who spilled it to his feet 0-2
Marv gives us a first view of his offside party piece. People just arent giving him the ball quick enough!!
