Lots and lots of mistakes are made with young players between the ages of 14 and 18. You should always judge them on what you see, not on who they may have been released by. The saying "One man's junk is another man's treasure" is never more apt than with young footballers.

Cairney was let go by Leeds while they were in L1.
David Platt was let go by Man U.
And of course Jamie Wood was let go by Man U and then turned into a CL and international player later in his career.
