I completely agree with this, both for the two reasons you put forward and also because it seems clear now that Webber did it without much idea about who was going to replace him (I can't seriously believe that even Webber wanted Lampard). And as you say, if Smith had come in in Dec/Jan, you wouldn't have people like me sniping at him from the sidelines. But now he is just as tainted as Farke with this horror of a season and if things start badly next year, he's in trouble. Another crucial decision that Webber got wrong.

Obviously, I disagree with you about Smith's ability as a manager, but he's not going anywhere so I have to hope you are right and I am wrong. If so, I will put my hand up next season and be very happy to do so.

 

Smith has done his best with scant resources so I don't want to unnecessarily run the bloke down. Having said that I was happy with Farke, the style of football, his dignified manner and his ability to turn It on in the second tier,t hat 18/19 season was brilliant. A big mistake parting with him.

I don't really like to judge a new manager until they get a chance to bring in his own players, and after a few games. I don't think he is tainted after this season, I think we all knew what a hard task this was going to be.

 

I agree. Smith's record so far is 4/4/12 which has yielded 16 points from 22 matches. That's not great, but over the season as a whole that would yield around 28 points. We'll have a better idea by the end of the season, but at this stage Smith looks to have the potential to gain promotion next year and then survive in the PL after a season to build his own team. It's only potential at this stage, but I'm willing to wait and see.

Incredible story at Bristol Rovers. They and Northampton were on the same number of points but Northampton had +5 goal difference so if Northampton won, it looked all over and they would take the third promotion spot. Northampton quickly went 3-0 up at Barrow and it looked all over. But Barrow got a goal back, then Bristol Rovers added five goals to their two in the first half and went ahead of Northampton on goals scored. Then there was a pitch invasion by the Bristol Rovers fans and the ref threatened to abandon the game. Eventually it re-started and a very nervy seven or so minutes before the match ended and Rovers went up.

You don't get that in the PL!
