Just in terms of tracking the bidding, it's good to know that an 9.5m bid from us could well be equivalent to some other team's 11m bid.

But it's not like Saints are actually getting Alderweireld any cheaper. We are bidding 9.5m, but the cost to Saints is still 11m.

Its the other way round surely. If we bid £11m we only actually pay £9.5m. If we only bid £9.5m and Athletico still owe us £1.5m thats like our real output is only £8m.

We only pay 9.5m in liquid cash. But the COST to us is still 11m-- 9.5m in liquid cash + 1.5m for waiving the buyback clause.

If Atletico sells Alderweireld to someone else, what is the net cash result for Saints? +1.5m cash
If we buy Alderweireld for 11m what is the net cash result for Saints? -9.5m cash

Instead of GETTING 1.5m, we are PAYING 9.5m. That's a difference of 11m.

You are assuming that we get the 1.5 million because the offer wasn't met, but it may never get to that. ISIRTP is correct...any offer from another club is 1.5 million lower if we match it, so 11 million (for example) is worth more to Atletico from us than from another club and 9.5 million from us is worth 11 million from anyone else. It is possible Atletico will just want him back and that will be the end of it. If they don't want him back, they will negotiate with us first or sell at agreed price.

Our ace in the hole is his desire to stay here (if he sticks to that). This idea that Atletico won't stick to the deal is all supposition anyway...perhaps a quick deal with no trouble will suit them (unless they actually want to play him).

Well, thats what I was saying. I think this has become semantics rather than mathematics.

I still say that the formula posted by Tupac was incorrect but never mind. The fact is that we can bid £1.5m lower than anyone else to have an equal bid.

Tupac's reasoning WAS wrong, as we have both pointed out.

We can bid 1.5m lower and our bid will be fully equivalent to everyone else's. Both in terms of what Atletico gets and what it actually costs us.

If we bid 9.5m for TA (and drop the buyback clause) it costs us 11m and Atletico gains 11m.
If Manchester United or anyone else bids 11m for TA, it costs them 11m and Atletico gains 11m.

The only difference is, less cash changes hands. Everything else is the same.

Or we can forget the maths and just accept that if a top four club want him, he's going to them. Let's just hope they have other targets.

Depends how strong his desire is to stay with us...this isn't a slave market, he can't be made to sign for another team. Atletico can get him back, but then will have to convince him to join team X. My guess is that his preference is to stay here, but probably not enough to put up much of a fight. Our people will have to talk to his people.

Big talk that Miranda is off in the summer. I wonder if there is still a place at Atletico for Alderweireld ? Would be great to keep hi though, best defender we've had since Micheal Svensson <ok>
