I don't know if it's been covered yet as I refuse to trawl through four pages of ****e. Anyway.... Does Neil Lennon really mean to tell us that Celtic is not one of football's pinnacle clubs? Players looking to "progress" could be leaving in the summer? Celtic fans: Where do Glasgow Celtic Football Club rank in Yewrope [sic] in terms of prestige?
There's an Italian fella we know who goes to Gers games, flies over every couple of weeks from somewhere in Italy. He says that there are quite a few Rangers fans over there, hard to imagine.
If you look at history, fanbase etc Celtic are a massive club. However, the SPL is one of the lowest ranked leagues in Europe. Celtic are a massive fish in a very small pond. With that in mind, it is very hard for a team like Celtic to make massive strides in Europe as, paying to much transfer fees and paying massive wages to players, just to attract them to the SPL, is a bad business model and would leave a massive hole in the finances - could end up getting liquidated! The most succesful clubs in europe are from the 3 top Leagues - La Liga, Bundasliga and EPL... who all attract massive amounts of TV revenue etc At a guess ... Celtic will earn approx £2 to £3m for winning SPL. Those who finish 20th in EPL wil earn £20m + The target for Scottish clubs is to make the Champions League group stages ... like the ambition of those EPL teams who spend £100s of millions just chasing 4th. Group Stages is a massive achievement. Anything above Group Stages is a bonus. Now, if SPL league winners where guaranteed Champions League Group Stage every year, Celtic might spend a bit more cash and attract some established players and possibly get to the quarters (and if they progress further in terms of football, semis). However, next seaaon Celtic face 3 qualifiers ... more than likely Celtic wil be in Europa League .., players dont want to play in that, so you would have to spend more on wages to try and attract them -something Celtic will never do as they are prudently run. So, if players want to progress their careers, they would want to try and get into a higher standard of league and maybe (one day) sign for a top 4 team in EPL/La Liga or Bundasliga ... Celtic's current business model is to buy (mainly) young players with potential, let them show their skill and sell on for a profit ... It works both ways then, Celtic make cash, player gets a move to a higher standard of league. In terms of current prestige ... Celtic rank alongside the Group of teams who commonly sit in the 3rd seeds Champions League draw pots.
Excellent information. So I guess it's simply a case of Neil Lennon saying that he's getting Celtic into the last 16 of the Champions League on 'peanuts'? Perhaps he fancies one of the 'big jobs' that will be available this summer?
However, next seaaon Celtic face 3 qualifiers Why,I thought last 16 would give them a good seeding or does it on go the whole performance of all Scottish teams in both European comps?
You don't have to leave. Just **** off back to the Celtic board and stop boring us to **** here. Or kill yourself
A bit rough and with plenty of new money floating around in Eastern Europe especially Russia it will make it tough not just for Scottish teams but English teams as well!
Yeah, Celtic sold McGeady for £9m... that basically built Lennon's team! He's done a fanstatic job putting his team together and getting them prepared for Europe ... to get that squad of players into the Champions League was an amazing achievment. Beating Spartak Moscow home and away, defeating Barca and finishing with 10 points... A baw hair away from getting a draw against Barca at the Nou Camp! He'll have another crack at Champions League with Celtic and then I think he'll move... He spoke really well after the game last night.
Why are Celtic like Oscar Pistorius? [NSFW]They've lost both legs and only had 3 shots on target.[/NSFW]
Yes, but the Champions route should in theory make it more viable for the SPL winners to reach the group stages.
