You are so right about the sentence I've emboldened RTID. Those things are truly worthy of our contempt and I'm sure most of us will have acted against a few such things in our time.

Certainly puts hating a non-entity like a football club into perspective.

Indifferent as I am then Boff? Peas in a pod, you and me. Somehow couldn't see much hate in you tbh.

Intense rivalry for you then eh Wubba, with some long standing personals thrown in? Whilst I don't feel any intensity with regard to Chelsea, I understand the rivalry bit.

More poignant for me is your musing on the word jealousy. Whilst this is also a negative emotion I usually step well clear of, I must confess to having let the green-eyed monster out at times this year when watching Norwich and Swansea piss all over us in the battle for points. Will this lead to me hating them though? Nah, can't do that. I love good football and equally love good football managers, and have nothing but appreciation and respect for both clubs.

Does it mean I'll be wanting vengence next season? Fact is, I want the Rs to beat every team, so Norwich and Swansea won't feature in my thoughts to any great extent.

    Don't really know you Brixton
But I do think I like you too.

Roll on hext season...when we both want our team to win and to win with really neat football, regardless of the other team!

Well, with due regard to York, Ninj and anyone else who's posted on here, I seem to be getting all the intelligent, conscious Rs for whom hate is either just a euphemism for rivalry or an alien concept.

Whilst this thread has yet to improve my capacity to hate, your posts have not only confirmed that I'm an R like anyone else but also that I'm in good company. Better still, it's given me a thumping good read on a boring football-less afternoon!

For what it's worth, I'm a Saints' fan and can't hate Pompey, although as the poster implied he was, I sometimes feel ashamed that I don't (for a second or two). More, when I lived in Pompey for a year or two, Pompey got to the semis of the FA cup against Liverpoool and I stood in a pub shouting for Pompey to win, because I wanted them to. So I've made a list of things, people or phenomena that I feel I do, or could hate, and they include:

. people who force their noise on you.
. people who since last night have been saying "winning is all that matters".
    . mindless patriotism.
. the idea of "big" clubs in football.
    . bankers.

When I review, or add to, the list, it always occurs to me that one set of supporters cannot really hate another. What they mean is : I am a fan of X United. I notice that all my fellow fans abuse the fans of Y Rovers and gloat at their misfortunes, so I will copy them. In this way, I feel part of a family. Anything more complex is too difficult for me.

Nope I hate Chelsea not for it's location to us nor the football ... It's what and how they have become... A successful football club I have no problem with that ... It's all in the brand marketing and it's unique IMO
Chelsea are now a brand and I feel proud I fully understand that

Other than that I am hippy

What we and Chelski have is not real hate. That I have seen up close living here for many years.
Its something I don't even allow my kids to say. A bit of healthy banter yes, hate, no.

I see it mate. I was just a bit surprised there wasn't any congrats from our local fans on their board given that there's a good few on this thread who say they don't hate them.

As you said yourself, its got to be in the blood.

No I don't 'hate' them swords but don't ask me to acknowledge their success

For some reason david(e) - why the cod pronunciation? - his hair, brings out the worst in me

Go back and see how many messages of congratulation we had from them on our promotion. I had a half hearted try and found a thread with messages from Bristol City, Man Utd and Sunderland fans on it. Not quite the Champions League I know, but on your terms pretty rude. Doesn't bother me at all.
Your wind ups are getting better Swords. The one on the Liverpool board was masterful.
Sorry for the distraction on what is a very thought provoking thread.

I don't hate Chelsea, simple as that. For whatever reason the compulsion has never really taken hold of me. Now West Ham, that's another story, can't stand the rankers.

That's a fair point Stan. I can't remember anyone other than our regular visitor DL congratulating us. My response to that would be: shame on them.

I was aware Sooper was getting rightly pissed off so I backed off a bit at that point. It is a genuine conundrum for me SB, although it obviously wasn't the best time to be posing such questions.

The funny thing on that Liverpool thread was when one of them came over here to see what I was posting and seen a dialogue between Swords Hoppster and myself. He went back to his board and said "the sad bastard is over on the QPR board talking to himself"!

Kudos to Oddball cos that was funny. :emoticon-0102-bigsm
