I asked a friend for you ... says he tends to get down on all fours and let them run his credit card up and down his naked bum crack until the required bill percentage figure is achieved ... mind you, I'm not convinced HIAG always tells the truth tbh..
Nah. Everyone expects a minimum of 15%... And I'm sure leaving less than that says "you did a bad job" more than no tip as you intended because no tip means you might have forgot. I'd feel less bad about tipping a taxi driver than a waitstaff though. Wait staff rely on tips for majority of their pay. Minimum wage (which is already ridiculously low) doesn't apply to restaurants or hospitality services with tipping so lots of wait staff get paid just a couple dollars an hour. Tips is how they make their living. Not tipping wait staff would be a douche move in the US unless they did really bad. Taxi drivers I think make less of a % of total pay from tips so not as big a deal. A friend of mine who used to be a waitress herself never leaves less than $3 even if her meal was only $6. I'm not that generous...
When we went to Mexico a few years ago we got out of the airport transfer coming back right outside the terminal. Some bloke insisted on pulling our cases about 20m to the queue then stopped and stared at us until we paid him. Found it very unnecessary. Didn't mind tipping the rest of the holiday as it was always for a service we'd asked for.
Largest % tip I leave is for my haircut. Place I goto Near my house is a cheap place only $12 a cut, I ask them to scissor cut instead of buzz it... And my haircuts are always well overdue when I get them. . I feel guilty so always tip them $5.
They're predatory in Mexico especially in tourist areas. Bands play awful music on buses and stare at you until you too them. In restaurants people not even employed at the restaurant sometimes hang out in toilets to hand you paper towels and turn on taps expecting you to tip them. It's really pretty sad how desperate some people are to beg tips out of tourists to get money.
Thats exactly how I feel. I never tip here in the UK. If I went abroad to the US then I might, seeing as those poor ****ers get $2 an hour or some ****. I personally feel its down to the employer to pay their staff, rather than basically have the workers begging the customers for hand outs so the employer can save a few bucks. In my eyes, asking for a tip is begging.
It's unfortunately one of those things that are added costs younger used to. Like in the US if you see something costs $100 on the shelf you're really going to be paying $110 because they don't figure in sales tax until you get to the register which can be 5% to 15% depending on what state, county, and city you're in. Tips are like that for service industry things only cost more. 20 years ago... 15% was average tip in the US until it began to be seen as minimum. Now 20% is the average. I'm sure before I die 25% will one day be the norm.
A guy I played football with got a scholarship to a US college to play over there and a few of my team mates went over to visit him a while back. They ran up a tab in some club over there and ended up tipping $450 as they used the 20% thing. I thought there might be some kind of limit to it or something
That's exactly what tips are about. I'm just glad most grocery stores ban tipping workers there. They pay their staff now. When I first came to US there used to be "bag boys" who would pester you asking to carry your groceries to the car because they wanted tipping. Bloody annoying. I think most people flocked to stores that didn't hire bag boys and eventually it ran out of favour and now stores don't have them.
I always tip, even the driver that brings the takeaway.. My percentages are high, I like to be spoilt..
What I hate is when you go to a restaurant in a group. Some restaurants automatically add a tip on to the bill if you're in a big group. Frequently it's a very generous tip too. I understand tipping is the norm here but I completely object to restaurants automatically adding a tip. I've never been into the club scene (when I was of age, in my state they could still smoke in clubs and I hated my hair smelling like cigarettes for days afterwards no matter how many showers I took.) However I bet clubs probably work same way as restaurants. If you arrive in a group they're probably going to automatically add a tip to your bill even if you didn't like the service.
A bunch of us played Myrtle Beach a few years ago and everyone was tipped from the second you get out of your car on many of the courses. They wouldn't let you lift a thing. Sorted your golf bags onto the buggies and kit into the changing rooms. Great service!
I only round up takeaway deliveries and let them keep the change. So £30 for a £28 or £26 curry. Same for black-cab drivers (who generally I hate). I tip mini cab drivers 10pc
I sold my Abbey national shares amid the Santander speculation and got 1450 per share. Came unstuck with others but still playing a bit.
