Biggest gamble I ever saw was in a hurdle race in a midweek evening meeting.
Horse was called Don't Run Rory (although for some reason, google will tell you no such horse existed).
As I remember it, over the course of half an hour or so leading up to the race, it was backed from 66/1 down and down and down and down and down, until it went off something like 6/4f.
It whacked every single hurdle the whole way round, and got beaten on the line by a head.
True story
