Pierluigi Collina had his detractors too. He used to make the laws up to suit himself and was admonished and punished at times by the Italian FA. They did not hold him in the same regard as the rest of the world, because they saw him week in week out. What I don't understand is, what is this handball stuff people are talking about?
As I recall his run-ins with the Italian FA were regarding off-field activities. The one game that I remembered he had a nightmare with was the UEFA Final in which Fabien Barthez was sent off. I think they are referring to an American game played with a ball that the players hit with their hands.
