There's articles on most racing sites, Irish Racing, Racing post etc. showing studies have revealed that racehorses are getting faster and faster than their counterparts from yesteryear. Does this then suggest that the performance of today's modern horse outweighs the achievements of those in the past. If the study is correct, which it seems to be, then that has to be the case. We are witnessing and have witnessed the best we have seen in the history of racing recently.

Apologies, I've no link as I am on the phone and not a computer but if you search you will find the articles about it on most good racing sites! I'm sure it will intrigue many.

Yes an interesting article but I'd suggest it needs to be qualified somewhat. What they seem to be saying is that races over shorter distances seem on average to be run in faster times than they were. Races over 10f+ show no improvement in time. I'm sure there could be lots of reasons for this but one could be that the recent focus of flat racing has been on 6-10f horses rather than the previous 8-16f+. They mention in the article that Derby winners of the 1970s would be aimed at the Ascot Gold Cup....well that's wrong. The last Derby winner to run in the Gold Cup was Blakeney ('69) so some of the conclusions they draw and statements they make may be similarly wide of the mark.But the gist of what they are saying may be correct that we favour horses that run over shorter distances and so we have faster sires going to stud (who would not have been thought worthy of going to stud 50 years ago), so we breed faster horses for shorter races. It appears self-reinforcing.

I'm hoping La Superba runs faster today in the 3.30 at Nottingham with the admirable Dane O'Neil in the sadlle. How's that STH?

So Arkle would have been running off a mark of 62 round Newton Abbot most summers had he been around today :biggrin:
 
Hello, everyone. Cor blinkin blimey how frustrating is that?!? Mr Henderson’s Cardinal Walter has missed the cut by 1 and at the moment won’t be getting a run in Saturday’s Plate ‘ooooooooooooooooooooooop’ at Newcastle (3.45). Is first reserve and the Cardinal would only get in if one of the twenty above him pull out within the next 24 hours. Let’s hope one of those ‘little’ Northern handlers do the decent thing so as Mr Henderson’s beast can get a run. Somehow I doubt that will happen, though.

On to happier news and a horse named after me makes its racecourse bow ‘oooooooooooooop’ at Hamilton this evening – Mr Chuckles (6.40). Those bookie chappies though thing he’s next to no chance! And they are probobly right...

A very poor one – 20. The horse who was ante-post fave, Seamour, though is even worse in 22. Lot of money on Oddschecker for the much more better drawn Quest For More, Clever Cookie, Gabriel’s King and Nearly Caught.

Baltic brave gets the Moore factor , full on clarets looks to have a decent chance but I think I have to take a chance on a 9/1 shot who was extremely impressive on the step up in trip with drowne on board lto . Today kirby gets to return to the saddle and I would be very upset if they didn't at least place in today's race . On times to distance alone they are asking a few runners to pull the rabbit out of the hat. I just hope kirby gets hold of STRATEGIC FORCE and gives them a run for there money.

Disappointingly quiet day, so here's a little diversion. Identify today's no-hope trixie from the following musical clues:

1. Baby I'm-a Want You (1971)
2. Larks' Tongues in Aspic (1973)
3. Fools' Gold (1989)

Funny you should mention La Superba, Bustino. She was 7/10 in an apparently no-mark little Class 5 maiden at Kempton on 1 April, in which the first three home were the decidedly smart Jazzi Top, and the pretty useful Hundi and Jasmine Blue. The also-ran I thought worth watching was La Superba, and I thought I'd cracked it when she turned up in a low-grade handicap at Newmarket (I've long had a theory about Elsworth 3yos in Newmarket handicaps which - putting it diplomatically - isn't showing a profit).

Anyway, that didn't work out, and neither did her next run. They seem to be struggling to find her trip; so far, the profile's always the same - mid-div., put into the race two out, and then can't quicken. I'd like to see DO'N put her in front early today and, though I can't quite bring myself to back her, I hope she wins for you. I agree about the jockey - much underrated, and blessed with a self-deprecating sense of humour not often found among the Little People.
 
I only played out of boredom <laugh> <monster> VERY slow day in the office today .................. again. I think I need a new job

Were ya on Ishebayorgrey this evening ste? Making great progression this season, the handicapper will have to be a bit upset with himself on him, I'd expect he will get a fair rise after this evening's victory. Pat Martin is flying it the past month or so.

I was on It sth but didnt get any word from the stable so didnt flag it up here.Pats doing really well the last few weeks so is a trainer to keep an eye on.a few of my mates are thinking of getting a syndicate together and Pat would be a trainer we would certainly consider.apparently weld & bolgers fees are huge!
